On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
He is good, remind me Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar

These are the ones to start off with. You may have a bit of diifficulty getting the 12 String Guitar Blues set as it is very rare but it is a great acoustic album.
You also need to listen to Slim Harpo - Sings Raining in my Heart and also try some Lightnin' Slim- Rooster Blues which was Excello records first full length album even though it was a comp made up of entirely singles.
Thanks Ewe, Slim and Lightnin’ are well represented chez Sloop thanks, that’s why I was so surprised Jimmy had bypassed me. JD Miller does add a certain something to this excello cuts though.

Still feelin’ the blues.

Miles Davis - Autumn Leaves - CD
Now demoing 252, and after 2 days it’s beginning to warm up and Autumn Leaves are bursting out of their buds!
I got this from Oxfam for £2.99. I haven’t played it much because my 282/SuperCap DR did not seem to give a musical sound to Jazz. No warmth and harsh.
I have vinyl of Stan Getz & Friends Early Year’s and John Coltrane’s Impressions, which have just sounded noisy! Have any of you had a similar experience with the 282? With modern music the addition of the 555DR PS to the nDAC left me sitting on the edge of my seat with the 282, but classical was ok - not really moving enough compared with the 252.
Hopefully next week my dealer should have the 552DR for me to demo. Comments on the 552 rendering/presentation of jazz much welcome.
Phil
A completely random pick off the CD shelves. 24 bit mastered and all that...

With a thank you nod to the poster who pointed me to the new and excellent Jimmie Vaughan Trio “Live at C-Boys”, if you’re exploring Jimmy Reed, I would suggest the recent (well, not that old... 2007) Omar Dykes and Jimmie Vaughan disc “On The Jimmy Reed Highway” for a modern take on the cool driving rhythm (and the classic JV “zero sustain” tone). Worth a spin, and ya can’t go wrong with Jimmie Vaughan!

Glad you like the Jimmie Vaughan Live set.
If you like swamp music then you have to try Silas Hogan, Lazy Lester and Lonesome Sundown

Excellent ambient music from Sweden. Sounds absolutely hypnotic!
Bandcamp.
A bit of solo Jerry, spread across two CDs. The version of "Ain't No Bread in the Breadbox" is sublime.

Good old style blues music (from 1958).

There has been quite a lot of discussion about this set in the past couple of weeks. I see in the "Last CD You Bought" thread, Eoink has joined the ranks of the faithful.
Ever since I acquired this fantastic Japanese box six years ago, I've never ceased to be amazed at just how good these CDs sound (and of course, the mini-LP packaging, and general attention to detail, are second to none).
I'm playing the first album and, like every other disc in this box, it sounds bloody fantasic - lovely pin-sharp detail, great bass, real whallop, no glassiness or brittleness... why this should be, nobody seems to be able to explain; as far as anyone knows these are taken from the early 90s Page masters. But they sound way better than bog standard releases of those, or the Barry Diament and latterday JP re-remasters. Best sounding Zep CDs out there, as I'm sure other devotees who have this box will agree.
Kevin,
The packaging and overall presentation looks stunning I must admit. Very tempting!
Likewise, I’ve been intrigued as to the sound quality described on these discs by forum members and wondered - has anyone tried or compared them with the 24-bit – 96.00 kHz HD remasters available on Qobuz etc?
I’ve got the standard CDs and they are not that great.

I can only re-hash what was said at the start of the whole SHM CD thing.
The material used is a highly transparent polycarbonate, which, according to CD Japan, resulted in :
Crystal clear sound,
Significantly higher resolution
Excellent balance and stability.
Reduction in distortion, and improvement in bass range volume.
I was a bit sceptical, and the industry poured scorn on the whole concept, likening it to the famous "green magic marker" saga.
Fact is, though, they sound bloody brilliant, as do some of the other SHM CD releases, so, plastic/schmastic, who cares, when the music sounds this good?
You're right Yeti, the standard CDs aren't great. I've no idea why this Japanese box sounds so wonderful, but it does. I can't play hi-res files (not got the gear), so I haven't done the comparisons you ask about - but I'm sure at least one Forumite has.
OK, thanks anyway Kevin, hopefully someone who has plunged for the HD versions can share their experience compared to the ripped CDs (SHM and standard discs).

Dave, the Bobbie Gentry SHMCDs (Fancy and Touch 'Em With Love) on Capitol/UMC sound wonderful - far better than the standard CDs. I wish they'd do her entire catalogue.
Again from the Jap CD box, it's the Brown Bomber, sounding absolutely fabulous!
(2015)
Why? Because I'm still gutted that at almost literally the last minute I had to cancel getting to see them in Edinburgh earlier this year
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy - SHM CD.
Guess that's me consigned to another Zep evening, chez Dave .......................... Again! .............. and, erm, LOUD!
