What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)

On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Revisiting favourite albums from your youth can often be a random walk with many (to put it kindly) not matching your happy memories of them. No such issues here. What a brilliant album Gerry Rafferty’s City to City is.
The second entry in Nelsons' planned Bruckner series is again excellent. My single reservation is that I keep being reminded that here is the man who should have succeeded Jansons at the KCO!

Nikolai Lugansky has joined Harmonia Mundi!
It will be a very good year if this won't turn out to be my record of 2018. As ever, Lugansky avoids bombast, while giving the impression of having huge power in reserve. It's been a while since I heard a 'D' recorded with such a lifelike presence, without bloated bass and an almost tangible focus to the entire range but especially the upper octaves. Using this to give the Accuphase a real workout.
Listening from CD-R, home mastered from the hires files using myriad software, and extremely pleased with the results - I'll burn a DVD with the flac files for comparison later, should be a fun experiment.
Cheers

EJ, really looking forward to this although I will have to wait until after the March 30th release in my part of the world. You have with your description of the sonics made it a little harder to wait patiently now. Recording quality aside, I wonder how his interpretation has changed over the years? He recorded the Op. 3, No. 2 and the Op. 23 in the year 2000. Do you have his earlier recording to compare?
Regarding the sonics is it typical Harmonia Mundi house sound ? I thought his Naive recordings were all recorded nicely. Do you know why he jumped ship?
Hi Doug, I did some checking for you, and came up with nothing much, except that the new production for HM was made by the same producer and technician that have done all his recordings for some time, which should guarantee some consistency of sound. I can only imagine it has something to do with the troubles over at Naive.
I haven't heard any of his early recordings - the first disc of his that I heard was his remarkable recording of Chopin's third sonata, for Onyx.
Cheers

Anna Meredith: Varmint
Stated as an influence on Manic Street Preachers for their new album (at least tangentially) http://www.bbc.co.uk/programme...-you-wouldn-t-expect
Murray Perahia - Bach: English suites 1, 3 and 6.
A 6 LP Box Set on Chess.Loads of out takes and alternative versions. Help Me is fabulous and Santa Claus is funny.
It would be really useful if posters would give us some idea of what genre these albums are.
Now Playing........
Carole King - Tapestry
Streaming on NAS.......... Jumping into time machine this morning and traveling back 47 years to when Carole King released 'Tapestry.' Living large off $126.00/month at the time during my 1st year of a four year enlistment in the Marine Corps. Time flies by...... Life is Grand!
Ismo Eskelinen - Bach vol. 2
- Suite in C Minor
- Suite in E Minor
- Prelude, Fugue & Allergro
- Wachet auf, ruft uns die stimme
I always enjoy listening to baroque music being played on a guiter or lute. As is the case with this recording. Ismo Eskelinen is new guitarist for me. He arranged the music for guitar himself, except for the prelude, fugue & allegro. If you like classical guitar music, than I can recommend this one.
Pink Floyd - The final cut
Now Playing....
Chris Isaak -San Fransico Days
Streaming on NAS....... Bringing it up to the 90's with some of Chris's fine vocals and guitar.......

Chely Wright - I Am The Rain
Streaming on TIDAL....... Chely is alive and well, the "I Am The Rain" was released in September 2016 and is one beautiful album. The opening track "Inside" will capture your attention and pull you into the rest of the album. Give it a spin you won't have any regrets at all.
Chris Stapleton - From a Room: Volume 2
CS continues in fine form from his 'From A Room: Volume 1' album with...err....'From A Room: Volume 2'.
Excellent stuff.
James Holden & The Animal Spirits live at Festival BBmix 2017
The performance & sound of this music at Islington Assembly Hall last year was fantastic. Grooves a-plenty & the sound engineer having golden ears. All instruments captured with amazing clarity, making it one of my best gigs of the year.
Cara Dillon - Cara Dillon
Continuing with the Cara-fest, I haven't listened to this for a while and it is rather lovely. Laid back Celtic folk, just the job to relax a tired mind.
Bjorn Riis - Coming Home
Released today, downloaded and getting its first outing, Airbag's front man continues his solo project with this EP.
Bad Co. - Anthology.
Following last night's Zepfest, kicking off this evening with something a little more subdued.
