What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)

On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
I must have had this album for >25 years and until today I recon I've played it twice. It just didn't click (and the vinyl still doesn't - it's superbly clean). Playing it now it seems quite pleasant.
(2014)
As often happens around these parts, after having listened to the fine new EP from Bjorn Riis, I had to go back to another of his albums, in this case his nicely recorded debut solo album Lullabies in a Car Crash.
Greg Brown - Covenant
Another Ewe recommendation from a while back. Impossible to pigeonhole the genre but mighty fine.
Sloop John B posted:Re SHM CDs - I have Santana, Supertramp, The Stones and The Who.
I always understood they made reading by the laser a more accurate process and so with no error correction by the CD, they sounded better
Rolled Gold does sound very good and the others certainly don’t sound bad but when I rip them with dBPoweramp, the accurate rip check “sees/reads ” them as the same as all the other rips.
We all hear what we hear and perhaps the fact that the rips appear to be the same as the standard CDs my expectation bias is that they will sound no better. My SHM Who hits is brick walled and a s/h 1990’s version is superior.
Interesting to see people saying their SHM CD rips sound better, perhaps they are superior masterings?
Anyway currently enjoying

I agree with all you points, Sloop. The SHM CDs are a materials first solution to moving CD replay on to a better level when being used in a CD player and being more efficiently read by the laser. Not all SHM CDs sound better as you point out, most often this is down to the remastering applied. In the case of Zeppelin's Definitive Collection SHM CDs, these were remastered and are an improvement on all previous Zeppelin CDs that I have ever heard. Apparently this marked improvement was also the case for the Definitive Collection Vinyl remasters although I have never heard them to confirm or deny that.
Your well made point stands and should be taken on board by members new to ripping and streaming i.e. ripping SHM CDs that haven't been remastered or altered in anyway will be no better than the standard redbook copy they probably already own. Another point (for those new to streaming and ripping) to note is that almost without exception early 80s CDs sound way better than their later usually more compressed loudness biased remasters.

The Hoax - Humdinger
Another new arrival today, this time through the letter box via a Discogs re-seller in Amsterdam. Lovely British heavy blues rock / R&B. Thanks again to ewemon for introducing me to the band.
Now Playing........
Till Brönner & Dieter Ilg - Nightfal
Till Brönner (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Dieter Ilg (bass)
Streaming on TIDAL....... Recently placed this in the TIDAL Queue after seeing mentioned here on the forum, and now taking it out for a spin. The first two tracks are quite enjoyable...
Reissued Blue Note vinyl from a couple of years back. Sounding superb.
First listen. Freshly downloaded 96/24 from highresaudio.com
Prince - The Truth.
Finally managed to capture this hard to find CD today, now ripped and playing via my now obsolete NDS.
His Purpleness goes acoustic, and, IHMO, this is up there with his best.
Oscar Peterson - Oscar in Paris
A 1996 concert recording of Oscar Peterson's quartet. The quartet played very well during this concert imo.

My experience has been totally different. I first heard this on release (1968) and I've played it maybe twice a month for the last 50 years.

Old vinyl
Why? The song Senior Citizens floated into my mind during the day. It has more poignancy now than it did when I first heard it 40 odd years ago...

Out of interest are you useing a Technics ?
I use a Technics SL1210 with stock arm and a Linn K9 on mine and just love its ease of set up - start up times - its so nicely engineered and robustI also use a LP12 which is all most the opposite of the Techie. As you have to treat it like a baby in terms of set up.Have had both decks over 25 years and have to say the Linn has been back to my dealer for a few services...oil - springs inspection etc. When it went a bit off soundwise, but the Technics has always been so consistant sound wise. The pitch stability is superb and it the bass is very taught compared to the LP12.
Both great Decks.....Love them... both Legendary decks
Classic Reggae album from 1978.On Island Records.....Playing on vinyl......sounding mighty fine
This guy is just amazing. I think if you like Chris Stapleton you should really try this. He’s even better if u ask me!

Keb' Mo' - Keb' Mo'
Someone posted this the other day and that reminded me I haven't played it for a while and playing it now reminds me what a fine album it is.
The more I play this the more I like it.......and since it's a double-album the fun lasts twice as long
This is a wonderful album, probably one of my Charlie Haden favourites.

Interesting: the more I play it the less I like it. It just seems detached and unengaging. Maybe I need to try harder...
Altered Five Blues Band - Charmed And Dangerous
Another big thank you to Ewe for recommending this one a while ago, it is a belter.
