Kacey Musgraves - Same Trailer - Different Park

Kacey Musgraves -Same Trailer Different Park

Streaming on TIDAL....... A mention from EWEMON above of  new release from Kacey above had me reach out for an earlier release (2013)....... Fun lyrics and a sweet voice.....

For a peak of how fun and sweet Kacey is take  quick peak of five of her songs when she performed on the NPR Tiny Desk series here: NPR Tiny Desk - Kacey Musgraves

Given the timing of Kacey Musgraves' appearance in the NPR offices — the Supreme Court had legalized gay marriage across America mere hours earlier — it was inevitable that the singer would trot out "Follow Your Arrow," the most anthemic go-your-own-way jam on Musgraves' 2013 debut album, Same Trailer Different Park. In fact, NPR Music has already published her performance of that song, which closes this Tiny Desk Concert.

But Musgraves also kicked off her set by showcasing four songs from the new Pageant Material. That album, her second, has its own share of anthemic odes to individuality — including the title track, which Musgraves performed at the Tiny Desk. But she also took the time to showcase some of Pageant Material's subtler material: "High Time" and the gorgeous ballad "Late for the Party" both sway sweetly in the hands of the singer and her impeccably dressed band.

At the end of it all, of course, comes "Follow Your Arrow," punctuated by all the crowd participation you'd expect from a song with "Make lots of noise" in its chorus. Musgraves made a point of showcasing her gentler side in this Tiny Desk Concert, but as it so often does, rowdiness prevailed in the end.

Set List: "High Time", "Family is Family", "Late To The Party", "Pageant Material", and "Follow Your Arrow"

Richard Thompson - Daring Adventures, original U.K. vinyl

On the train back from London today I was reading a book where Al Bowlly’s music is a recurring theme. This got the song Al Bowlly’s in Heaven stuck in my head. So out came Daring Adventures to hear it properly. An interesting album, some of the songs haven’t aged well, a bit too self-consciously quirky, but even then well played and sung, and great fun. At the end of side 2 it has 2 of my all time favourite Thompson songs (and thus all time favourite songs by anyone.) The aforementioned Al Bowlly is a poignant jazz-tinged number telling the tale of a homeless crippled 2nd world war veteran through his own eyes, and the stunning How Can I Ever be Simple Again, which tells of innocence in a war zone, and shows how a simply folky number with solo acoustic guitar and voice can make you cry with the poignancy of the playing when the guitarist is one of the greats. As I said a couple of the songs are musically fun, but sound a bit cheesy lyrically, but overall a set of strong numbers brilliantly played by Thompson, and two masterpieces.

This one grows on me each time I play it, Ese has a great voice just made for rock, soul, blues and probably Jazz too. This album has been championed by our very own Kevin-W of this parish and is available via the usual online outlets.

Gregg Allman, Southern Blood, 1st press vinyl.

My album of 2017, a southern blues album, Gregg Allman was too weak from his terminal liver cancer to write more than one song for this, so he chose a set of covers from his great contemporaries, Dylan, The Dead, Tim Buckley, Jackson Browne and more. Songs that focus on what life means, and what leaving it means. The album isn’t as heavy going as that makes it sound, he recorded it with his touring band of some years, so what you have is a genuinely great vocalist supported by a fine band who know him well, singing wonderful songs from tender ballads to bluesy rockers. My standout track is the one original number, Only True Friend, a  number looking back at a life and at leaving it, with the heart-rending refrain “I hope you’re haunted by the music of my soul when I’m gone”, but it’s an album of standouts really. A musically superb album of grownup rock, I love it deeply.

Eoink, I got this when it was released and agree with your comments and observations, it's a fine album. I hate to mix up postings but while you're online have you heard back from "The Hoax" after you bought their vinyl? I haven't heard anything back at all from their site except that my paypal was accepted two weeks ago, still no sign of the album here yet let alone any despatch details....

I used to play this a lot, and haven’t listened to it for ages. I was reminded of it by the Rovi booklet for a Jakob Bro album.... what a good album it is

Much as I love J.J. it's been a while since I've played this one, as ever it was well recorded with none of that loudness bias nonsense.

Hi Stevee, no, I haven’t heard anything from them either. (And irritatingly I realised I hadn’t completed the CD order for the other album on the river, it was showing in my move to basket list, but no longer available, so I  suspect you got the only copy they had, enjoy it!)

It's surprising just how difficult it is to get hold of their albums, such a shame because they were/are an excellent band who should be in most music lovers libraries. I'll give it another week before I try and contact them directly about my purchase and its non arrival. I'm sure that you've already looked at Discogs but there are a few remaining albums over there.

All the best

Ese and the Vooduu People - Dynamite, WAV download.

1st listen, an album championed by Kevin_W and Stevee_S has to be worth a go, so I've ordered the CD and downloaded a WAV copy from BandCamp. Great stuff, I can only echo Stevee, she’s got a great torchy bluesy voice, and she nails these songs. This’ll get a few plays in the near future, lovely stuff, if they’ve got a gig when I’m in t’Smoke I’d love to see them live.

Heard a track off this at the Bristol Show, it is rather good. This is one reason I go to the show. You get to hear some great gear and discover one or two little gems like this.
