Rag 'n' Bone Man - Wolves.

Some more great singing from Rory, and though this extended EP does contain a bit more rapping than the subsequent, and much

better known, gazillion selling album, it's still a great piece of work.

Many thanks for the info Kevin, March is shaping up to be a month of good acquisitions. Did you get them from CD Japan?

Indeed I did Steve. If you end up getting them, let me know what you think...

I just ordered two of them Fancy & Touch Em'. I'll let you know what I think of what will be a SHMCD rip, fingers crossed but from what you say I'm very hopeful and looking forward to hearing them.

Men Without Hats - Rhythm Of Youth

I Just dug out my old LP that I bought back in 1982 - mainly on the strength of The Safety Dance which was all the rage at the time.  I haven't listened to this in many years, but really enjoyed this, and took me back to snow bound days in New Hampshire.

Blimey - that's a blast from the past! I had Safety Dance as 12" single - remember them! Must track down the CD.

I'm going through some of my old '80s LPs that I haven't played in many years - most I recorded from new to my Nak to save wear on the vinyl, so after a quick clean on the RCM they are coming up like new, and in many cases sound superb. Next up is Yaz (Yazoo for everyone outside the US) and Upstairs at Eric's...

Oceans of Slumber - Winter

Another band totally new to me, thanks for the heads up Simon, well judged Dark metal that digs nice and deep. I'm really liking that hard and heavy take on "Nights in White Satin", that will do very nicely for me thanks

Genesis - Wind and Wuthering (1976)

So far I prefer this to Nursery Cryme.

Phil

What!?!? As John McEnroe would say “You cannot be serious!” More listening to Nursery Cryme required, me thinks.

Humble apologies, Jedi Clive! Maybe I need a 552 Light Saber to fully appreciate it!

Phil

I think this is the last of the progressive era Genesis. Although ‘And Then There Were Three’ is passable, after that it was more aimed at commercial success. All IMHO, of course.

Try Foxtrot though. That is a true prog tour de force.

To which I would add A Trick of the Tail and Selling England By The Pound

Just for the record, I think we need the Lamb in this list!

Nothing because I've been replying to forum posts all day long whilst waiting for the AA to come and pull me out of a ditch. Beast from the East! Why choose me?

George Duke - Face The Music

After fishing in the big river for some time now, I have eventually landed this beauty for a reasonable price. This can fetch silly money BTW. Some hot jazz-funk to fend off the winter freeze.

This is a belter and thankfully George surrounds himself with some great musicians and manages to stay true to his roots, avoiding some of the over-commercialised stuff that has afflicted a number of his albums of the past.

If you like your jazz-funk 'right on the money', I recommend you give this a go. Thankfully it is on Tidal so you don't need to splash any cash to sample this great album.

It's a great album Nigel, certainly my favourite from George Duke, and one I never tire of hearing, so well done.

Interesting you mention it being on Tidal.  I was at a show last year and while listening to a big Naim system with I think some active speakers from another company, I was asked to pick a track from Tidal and searched on this album.  I am very familiar with the opening track from this album as it has long been one of my test tracks for me to quickly gauge a system's performance.  So imagine my surprise when it played to hear it sounding rather two dimensional and a bit synthetic, sort of "processed" in a bad way. Not at all what i was used to hearing.  I just don't know whether it was the Tidal source, the system, or the speakers (the speakers were the only unknown to me in the system).  Anyway, if it was the Tidal source, you'll be very pleasantly surprised by improvement from the CD.

Richard, the Tidal stream of this sounds half decent here but of course the ripped CD sounds much better. There are many versions/masters of this album and I notice the prices of the different versions vary considerably. It is possible that Tidal have changed the master they use for streaming, or if the show you attended was in another country it is possible I guess Tidal use different masters in different regions. Not sure.

What is for sure, this is one of George Duke's finest IMHO.

Richard has recommended this album before and, following that recommendation and hearing some of the album through the internet, I bought it on CD several months ago ( had to pay a bit for it though). Worth it though - it sounds fantastic especially the title track.

When I said the title track above, I meant the first track, Black Messiah.

Posted on: 01 March 2018 by Clive B

I just finished a session on the Wattbike and had 'One After Nine O Nine' going round and round in my head. So I'm now playing the naked version of the album. It seems a bit odd with the tracks being in a different order from the original album, but I think it's preferable to the Phil Spector mixes.

Four Tet - Pause

You know how when a mate recommends a record to you, you try it and you like it? And then you go out and find one for yourself by the same band, and it's even better. Well it's like that.

I first heard this guy playing "live" on Jools Holland's show, liked what I was hearing, so bought this one, "Parking Lot Symphony" and another album,"Backatown" on the strength of that.

A great couple of great albums of New Orleans funk, r 'n b and hip hop ............. what's not to like?

Posted on: 01 March 2018 by Kevin-W

Given that today might turn out to be the coldest March day on (UK) record, it seems appropriate to give this CD a spin. Thomas Köner's Nunatak Gongamur (1990), created entirely with electronically treated gongs, is a chilly depiction of an Arctic landscape or journey. Brrr!

Genesis - and then then there were three - CD (1978 remastered 2007)

Bought from Oxfam for £2.99  -  not their premium price. I think this album is a bit demanding on the system and was pretty much unlistenable when the demo 252 was newly installed. It’s very full of sound, but it is really quite good at a lower volume (8 o’clock). The lyrics are very good and there is a lot of beauty to the music. Maybe some of the classics got drummed into this ex Charthouse public school band!

Opinions on best Genesis albums from the various eras very welcome. Who is the lead singer of this trio?

Did anyone ever see the show man (Peter Gabriel) perform with them?

Phil

Hi Phil

Spookily I bought Wind&Wutherimg today for 99p from our local British Heart Foundation shop and very fine it sounds too as it is an early copy,I believe this is from the Phil Collins era but my first stab at their still progressive period

Genesis - Wind and Wuthering (1976)

Hi Alan

Playing this one now on TIDAL! Good to get an early one at a bargain price!

So far I prefer this to Nursery Cryme.

Phil

Hi Phil

I must confess I have a soft spot for the later Genesis era with the self titled album having I feel some strong material and also enjoying the We Can't Dance album that you sampled .Maybe we two will have to go against the grain regarding our esteemed forum colleagues views on which era is best.Having said that I still enjoy some of Phil Collins early solo stuff and manage to seperate the fine music from the bashing he now seems to take so what do I know?
