What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)

On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Have a nice listening album so far. Started with two Oscar albums, always nice to start up with...
Then I switched to this great album with atmospheric guitar sounds with driving bass and drums behind it...
And now switched to a relatively young talented guy. Nice jazz
2017 - Tidal...
Lights dimmed and a quick refill. No better way to enjoy this.
I guess I don't need to say anything about this album.
Kate Bush: Fifty Words for Snow. Obvs. An inteesting take on the ice realm.

Bought from Oxfam for £2.99 - not their premium price. I think this album is a bit demanding on the system and was pretty much unlistenable when the demo 252 was newly installed. It’s very full of sound, but it is really quite good at a lower volume (8 o’clock). The lyrics are very good and there is a lot of beauty to the music. Maybe some of the classics got drummed into this ex Charthouse public school band!
Opinions on best Genesis albums from the various eras very welcome. Who is the lead singer of this trio?
Did anyone ever see the show man (Peter Gabriel) perform with them?
Phil
Hi Phil
Spookily I bought Wind&Wutherimg today for 99p from our local British Heart Foundation shop and very fine it sounds too as it is an early copy,I believe this is from the Phil Collins era but my first stab at their still progressive period
Alan
Genesis - Wind and Wuthering (1976)
Hi Alan
Playing this one now on TIDAL! Good to get an early one at a bargain price!
So far I prefer this to Nursery Cryme.
Phil
Hi Phil
I must confess I have a soft spot for the later Genesis era with the self titled album having I feel some strong material and also enjoying the We Can't Dance album that you sampled .Maybe we two will have to go against the grain regarding our esteemed forum colleagues views on which era is best.Having said that I still enjoy some of Phil Collins early solo stuff and manage to seperate the fine music from the bashing he now seems to take so what do I know?
Alan
Hi Alan
I’m really not sure about Genesis yet. What will Clive say? Probably we are not feeling the Force and ready to be Genesis Jedi yet! I can see that the later albums don’t have the complexity or it it just the prog rock influence. In the late sixties and early seventies I was busy studying and did not take in Pink Floyd and Dire Straight either. Bit cash strapped particularly doing D Phil studies at Oxford and then marriage. Boring maybe!
Phil
Just finished Green Street by Grant Green .An excellent jazz guitar album with great accompaniment from the supporting players
Now just teeing up American Fool by John Cougar ( before he dropped the Cougar and added the Mellancamp)
Alan
Another chilled-out Thomas Köner CD: Permafrost (1993):

Hi Phil
Boring never! We all had our priorities and if I remember correctly records were not exactly cheap during that period .Talking of prog rock I had already nailed my flag to the Emerson,Lake&Palmer mast before Genesis came along and appear to have missed out on some good music that like yourself I will investigate

Now Playing.......
Nerina Pallot - Stay Lucky
Streaming on TIDAL........ Another late 2017 release sitting in the TIDAL queue and taking out for another spin...... As others have mentioned, fantastic voice and album!

Another band totally new to me, thanks for the heads up Simon, well judged Dark metal that digs nice and deep. I'm really liking that hard and heavy take on "Nights in White Satin", that will do very nicely for me thanks
Pretty good innit? ????

Adding to the subsequent discussion, I'm glad you posted this.
Nothing like my usual fodder, but I've enjoyed listening to it via Spotify while doing some reading this evening.
The last track in particular has shades of Vulfpeck, who a mate of mine was talking about recently.
Some of the playing, especially the drumming, is TIGHT.
Social Distortion-White Light White Heat White Trash
Now Playing.........
Alan Jackson - Who I Am
Streaming on NAS....... One of my favorite Alan Jackson albums from 1994. With all the mention of the snow & freezing weather caused by the Beast from the East I thought a little "Summertimes Blues" was in order.......
Beck-Sea Change
Just Finished.......
Alan Jackson - Don't Rock The Jukebox
Streaming on NAS........ continued on with an earlier release from '91 from Alan.......
Now Playing........
Annie Lennox - Diva
Streaming on NAS....... Wife arrived home and putting on one of her favorites albums! Annie has got one hell of a voice, love her music.....
Green Day. American Idiot. On CD from 2004. A brilliant rock opera that also delivers a powerful socio-political message.
Haven't played this Cindy Bullens album in sometime. Really good set of songs dedicated to her young daughter who died of cancer in the mid 90's.
Features contributions by friends such as Lucinda Williams, Bonnie Raitt, Rodney Crowell, Beth Neilson Chapman.
If you haven't explored her catalogue of work then if you like the above I recommend that you do.
Another really good singer songwriter you don't see on here much. I don't think he has made a really bad album in his almost 40 year recording career.
If you like JJ Cale give this guy a listen and if you like his voice but don't like this album then listen to another one of his you might like it.
Richie Havens- End of the Beginning.
Ray Wylie Hubbard (a great friend of James McMurtry)- Snake Farm
I seem to recall they used to play an Austin Club together on a Monday night but could be wrong.
Great Texas rawk album, crunchy growling guitars.
A less introspective more raw/expressive account, as usual. An interesting contrast to how we know these pieces so far...

That was the first album I bought of his many years ago now. I agree with everything you say. (As usual!). If one hadn't found him yet then seek him out.
