What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)

On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:

Excellent release indeed.
It is not your everyday type off music but if one cares to invest a little bit of time and attention the reward is truly worth the time spent.
On vinyl
Why? Not had them out for a while and this one especially required a spin.

Following the live Genesis ideas above, this is one of the best, with a version of Supper's Ready which easily beats the Seconds Out version. And the SQ on this set is considerably better than the Steve Hackett Albert Hall set.

Not come across that one, Clive. Might explore it.

Genesis - ... and then there were three ... CD (1994 new mix 2007)
Playing this on the demo 552 DR that arrived an hour ago. Already the equal of the 282/SuperCap DR. As my dealer says this CD and others from Genesis really bloom on good HiFi. Now I need to wait another few days for it to really warm up. I’ll post on the other thread about 282 regrets.
Phil
Good stuff, Phil. At risk of distracting from the music thread, my dealer warned me that even a fully run in 552DR would take about five days to properly warm up from cold before it would show what it is really capable of. He was spot on, to the day, so be patient.
Mike
Mike, I’m already impressed. But I know from experience that it’s best to delay before making costly decision as the sound does evolve and has at times lost its edge so to speak.
Phil
1980 - Vinyl - UK pressing...
I could never, and still don't, "get" Supertramp although this album is pretty descent. Maybe it is because it's live, hence a lot more "energetic" than their studio albums.

Definitely. Given the cost, it's worth being very critical to be really, really sure. I asked myself several times while I had it at home: is the 552DR's performance that much better than the 282/SCDR? And continued to do so for a couple of weeks after the demo unit had been returned when I was again listening to my 282/SCDR.

Clive, Was it a Peter Gabriel era concert?

You're not trying hard enough, Tony. They're a great band.
Tom Adams - Silence
I think it was Bert who first posted this a while ago.
This is totally relaxing while being entirely engrossing. Simply beautiful. Try listening to this reclined with the lights out! It will ease those stresses and strains of the day. Guaranteed.
Wonderful stuff.

No, Mike, I did try. I have 3 of 4 of their albums including Breakfast In America and Crisis What Crisis, also on vinyl, to compare. I'll keep on trying but( boy oh boy!), they are a hard bunch to get some loving 'round 'ere!

Phil, Genesis Revisited is a project from Steve Hackett, their guitarist from 1971-77, which mainly plays music from the Gabriel era, at least when I saw them. A very faithful version of the glory years band, if you get in to Gabriel era Genesis, this is well worth a listen.
Vinyl
Why? Follows Rush, sort of. They're both trios...
steve
Now onto the second disc of the Layla 40th Anniversary Edition and some cracking live stuff from Eric and the band preserved from The Johnny Cash TV Show - awesome

Phil, if you can, have a listen to Steve Hackett's The Tokyo Tapes. It is really well recorded and there is a great version of King Crimson's I Talk To The Wind with the original member Ian Mc Donald on flute. Not fan of the vocals but it brings back wonderful memories of my teenage years. Enjoy it!

Nice, very similar to James Vincent McMorrow but a bit more chilled

Yes I posted this one some time ago. I find this a haunting album, one of those nice big surprises. You trigger me to put it on as well. Thanks for remembering me.

Michelle Malone - Slings & Arrows
Streaming on TIDAL........ A repeat from yesterday, new release, Michelle has a great voice, singer, songwriter and a quote from Guitar World describes Michelle as “Equal parts bad-ass guitar slinger and sweet songstress, with masterful lyrical introspection - sublime to raucous. ” worth a listen.........
IMHO this is a belter, Seakayaker. Certainly one to add to my CD collection. Great shout.

Joan Baez - Whistle Down The Wind
Streaming on TIDAL....... A new release (03/02/2018) from Joan caught my eye and thought I would take it out for a spin. It is nice to see another silver hair individual from my generation still holding down a job contributing to the benefit of society like myself. (except I can't sing)

In July 1977 Art Pepper played three days in the Village Vanguard. This is a recording of one of the sets. I think their are about 7 CD’s available. Unfortunately I don’t have them all. These were good sessions of Art Pepper. In this session Art Pepper plays a solo version of ‘Over the rainbow’. ‘More for les’ refers to a song Art Pepper wrote for a good friend, which he also plays during this set.
The Thursday, Friday and Saturday albums are all superb, and well worth getting hold of.

No, this is very recent (2013) Steve Hackett revisiting the great Genesis music from his era with the band up to and including Wind and Wuthering. The singer is Nad Sylvan, who is surprisingly similar to Peter Gabriel. This live triple disc set features several guest vocalists, including Nik Kershaw, Jakko Jakszyk, Amanda Lehmann and the late, great John Wetton (King Crimson, UK, Asia et al). There is also a guest spot from Steve Rothery. There are two studio albums of the revisited material too and at least two live sets: this one and one from the Albert Hall, which suffers from poor SQ (particularly in the bass). Both live albums come with DVDs too. The DVDs are excellent.

Tony, Thank you. Would you recommend getting the CD + DVD version of Steve Hackett’s Tokyo Tapes on the river to see them perform?
Listening to Tina Turner’s Private Dancer on vinyl at the moment. It gets the 552 treatment as well.

Seakayakers, How does her voice sound now compared with the early days?
Phil
I heard today that a version of Friends will be released for record store day this year. I doubt there'll be any left by the time I get there, but I thought I'd play this vinyl to remind myself of the song. Currently enjoying the excellent (plagiarised) Gallows Pole.
