Andras Schiff - Beethoven: diabelli variations

First CD (the albums Africa's Blood and Battle Axe) from this splendid double-header. Hugely entertaining early 70s roots reggae for a grey Sunday morning.

I got this from our Canal Trust Book shop for £6! Playing now with the demo 552DR. Sounds amazing. Fingers crossed that it continues without problems. No expert on precise identification.

Phil

It's a good 'un Phil. Trust me, it'll knock the likes of the umpteen anniversary, MFSL pressings etc. for six.

Having listened to the first side again and the CD (Harvest CDP 7 460012) I have the say I prefer the vinyl which has more sharpness and clarity. Anyone know if my CD which is not remastered is ok?

Phil

I'm not familiar with the CD you have, Phil, but I've tried a few DSOTM CDs and the best I've heard is this one:

This is the 30th Anniversary Edition SACD. It's a hybrid disc with a CD layer, which is the one I listen to.

I very much agree. It used to be one of my regular test CDs for trying out new kit.  Must give it a play again soon.

UK first press vinyl. I'd forgotten I had this album - in fact I'd forgotten I even liked her (or this record). It's pretty good though, and she has a super voice.

Jain: Zanaka (Deluxe) - iTunes Download.

Plunged for this album after seeing her on Jools Holland a while back - and what a refreshing cross over mix of styles this superb debut album is. On this evidence, I very much look forward to what she does next! Well worth a listen.

Two musicians who were better together than apart in my opinion.

I was going to say that any song with Christine singing is good, but I think she benefitted from the songwriting of Clive Gregson and his musical direction.

UK first press vinyl of a 1989 12-inch hit single. The drumming is ace, and it has a splendid groove. Owes an awful lot to Can, though.

After a bit of Pylo from the Naim label, I dug out an old copy pf ELO's Out of The Blue on vinyl.  I have a few copies of this including an old US one that has SR/2 in the dead wax. I recently learned from stumbling onto an online discussion group on vinyl that this means it's a Stan Ricker half speed mastered cut - I had no idea!  Anyway, I obviously decided that I had to give my old US copy a clean and a spin.  And... very nice. I'd quite forgotten how good this one was (in spite of the compression that's there on all issues). Nicest of all, the spindle holes are concentric - something that's not always the case with UK Jet pressings.

Genesis - We Can't Dance

As I have the house to myself and prior to the rugby kicking off, I thought I would play some of the vinyl red box set.

Thanks to forum members for the recent mentions of Genesis.

I have no issues with Phil and SWMBO is a BIG fan.

Having listened to the Fools Gold twelve-incher, I thought I would revisit their 1989 debut album, on original UK vinyl.

Apart from "Shoot You Down", "Waterfall" and the duelling guitars in the second half of "I Am The Resurrection", this is a perfectly pleasant but rather unremarkable album of Byrds-inflected pop. It's difficult to see what the fuss is/was all about.

Oh, and Ese & The Vooduu People's version of "I Wanna Be Adored" is way better than the Roses' original...

Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson nice easy listen.

Kev,

Nice summing up of The Roses debut album.I think it still stands up as a classic,as you say "Resurrection" and " I wanna be adored are big tracks. It was a perfect record for the Acid house - baggy musical climate in the United Kingdom.I was gutted that I didn't have a ticket to see them at Spike Island their 35 000 gig that summer.Did see them on the Second Coming tour and they where good.

I think they have split again after their last tour.....we never did get the new material they said they where working on.I think they just got back for the payday.Don't blame them.I remember something in the paper and Mani said he was down to his last £150 and goes to his cashpoint and on the receipt there was £2 000 150  ! .... and that was on their first reunion tour.

I also have the Fools Gold 12 ".......played it last week and have to say it pushes a lot of bass out

Hi Ian - I saw them twice. Once at Ally Pally at the height of the whole Madchester madness (end of '89 I think?). the band were out of it and so were the audience. I remember a 20-minute version of "Fools Gold". Mani and Reni were fairly tight but Squire and Brown were completely off, with the latter hitting a pair of bongos with a stick in completely different time from the rest of the band.

Before that I saw them right at the beginning of '89 at the Angel Centre* - a leisure centre in Tonbridge in Kent - before the first album was out. There were just 30 or 40 people there. hey were a lot tighter in those days!

*They used to have interesting bands on at the Angel - I also saw Loop, The House of Love and The Orb there in the late 80s/early 90s.

Early 1980s UK vinyl. I just fancied hearing it. It's an album stuffed full of classics...

(1969)

Recorded between 1953 and 1960, I'm using this as a bit of a warm up before listening to The Hoax.
