Vigil in Wilderness of Mirrors - CD Rip
Edward
Hi Edward,
If you haven't already tried this album, give it a spin. I think it is a modern classic. Powerful stuff.
All the best, Simon.

Totally in agreement with Simon (who flagged this album up to me), anyone who enjoys their Marillion with Fish will like this one, a lot!
Walter Davis Jr. - Davis Cup
Walter Davis, Jr.'s debut record as a leader for Blue Note is a terrific hard bop session, a driving collection of six original tunes that emphasize the strengths not only of the pianist himself, but also his supporting band: trumpeter Donald Byrd, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Art Taylor. Apart from the lovely ballad "Sweetness," Davis Cup moves along at a brisk pace, with the rhythm section urging the soloists to new heights. Byrd has rarely sounded better, and on this date McLean provides ample evidence that he was moving beyond the conventions of hard bop and developing his own unique style. Davis, of course, does more than acquit himself -- he contributes an engaging, energetic performance that keeps the music grounded. His compositions are just as captivating, whether it's the swinging "Rhumba Nhumba" or the darkly invigorating "Minor Mind." It all adds up to a wonderful straight-ahead hard bop date, one that's so good it's a wonder that Davis didn't receive another chance to lead a session until 1979.
And of course 1980 also brought us...

Matthews Southern Comfort - Later That Same Year, 1980 German vinyl
Reissue of the 1970 original, adding their number one Joni cover Woodstock, though confusingly not adding it to the track list on the sleeve. An album of folk rock originals and well chosen covers, Ian Matthews has a great voice, and the band are very good. Enjoyable folk rock album.
Although I had a few Velvet Underground and Lou Reed albums, I had never investigated John Cale until now. I bought Paris 1919 and was pleasantly surprised. I will be definitely buying some more of his albums.

Touch - Touch
Progheads ahoy! This odd, one-off Yank band can justifiably lay claim to being one of the first true Prog bands. Released in 1969 ahead of the first Yes album it has many pre-echoes of that album and those to follow it.
The main man was one Don Galluci, who as a 15 year old recorded that organ riff for Louie Louie, and whose production (pretty much the very next thing he did after Touch) of The Stooges second album Fun House (which remains a cornerstone of system testing for me) was apocalyptic.
Sadly, though the music on the album is pretty much uniformly great, the production totally sucks...
...but get the opening riff out of your head if you can...

Avishai Cohen - Into The Silence
Avishai Cohen (trumpet), Yonathan Avishai (piano), Bill McHenry (tenor saxophone), Eric Revis (double bass), Nasheet Waits (drums).
Streaming on TIDAL....... In the mood to listen to some of Avishai's sweet trumpet, a super album and great quintet.
Yep. I'm having a bit of Alison Krauss evening. Such a hauntingly beautiful voice.
I almost tempted to get a pair of cowboy boots and cowboy hat to properly join in the mood
The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow
Vinyl re-issue.
Kauan - Sorni Nai
Thanks to Stevee_S for great recommendation, Sorni Nai is a beautiful atmospheric musical story.
Of course, you need to learn more about mysterious Dyatlov Pass incident and you will be very impressed by this album. Excellent!

The Allmans finest. I was lucky enough to see them in 1974 at Knebworth. An amazing day
The Brothers Allman greatly missed.

Mekons - Curse of the Mekons, original U.K. vinyl
A band that should have been huge (IMO), I love this album. The Mekons in politically engaged mode, varied musical styles, solid rock/ country rock foundations with assorted folk instruments adding textures over, songs ranging from rockers via folk rock to experimental. Clever lyrics, classy settings, well sung, especially the ones sung by the wonderful,Sally Timms, this is a blast from stylus drop to the end of the second side.
