What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)
Posted by: Richard Dane on 31 December 2017
On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
First up....Chris Jones - Roadhouses & Automobiles
.....next John Mayer - Continuum
......and now James Taylor - Hourglass
An eclectic mix I grant you. Why these? All very different but all have a great vibe in their own ways.
(2017)
Dirtwire - Blaze
Dirtwire's latest release, where they carry on doing what they do best with those Appalachian, world and swampy sounds of theirs that I've enjoyed over the past six or seven years. Well worth checking out if you haven't come across the band before.
1990 - CD (rip)...
Mazzy Star = She Hangs Brighlty
Now playing......
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
via CD player........ Tori is sounding mighty powerful this morning, a fantastic album! Turning up the volume, the feet are tapping and the earth is moving......
Rory Block - Rhinestones and Steel Strings, original US vinyl
Arrived yesterday, 1st spin. She’s a very very fine blues guitarist, a mix of delta blues numbers and her own songs, she sings with soul, ther’s great piano, and did I mention she’s a serious blues guitarist?
Another one from that Atlantic Jazz mega-set. On vinyl of course. Does what it says on the tin:

Thanks, Eoin. This is the second or third time I've seen mention of her here. I'll give it a go on Tidal.
Just finished playing a couple of double albums ;Ginger Baker - Ginger Baker's Airforce and Stevie Wonder with Songs in the Key of Life
Alan
War on Drugs - A Deeper Understanding
With warm thoughts of a close friend whom I'm not getting on that well with at the moment, who first suggested to me that the sound (admittedly of the first album) was Springsteen-ish.
Now Playing.......
Tori Amos - Under The Pink
via CD player....... continuing on with Tori this early afternoon, strong wonderful vocals, lyrics and music!
Bit of Dylan with dinner. On a late 1970s/easrly 1980s UK vinyl LP:

What a record, so fresh, great tunes.
Always good to see.
I remember Joe playing the piano at school assembly. He didn't too badly in his career, did he?

Adele 19 - WAV CD rip
I may be the last person on the planet to listen to this, Various different personal reasons kept me from any serious listening to new music from about 2008 to 2016, so although I’d heard of Adele I’d assumed without reason that she was a manufactured singer like so many. When 25 came out I bought it for my late wife for Christmas, and loved it. I’ve finally got around to getting 19 and 21 from the river, 1st play of this, and I’m as impressed as I was with 25. For me she’s the real deal, these are very good songs, great lyrics, good variation of styles and good tunes, sung by a singer who means it. A decade after the rest of the world, I think this is one ‘f the great debut albums.
This is one of my top 5 LED songs...
Enjoyable to close this short day...
Andrei Korobeinikov recently featured on cello-piano recordings with Johannes Moser and Alexander Kniazev, and here he plays with Pavel Gomziakov - either the man isn't very picky about partners, or more likely he enjoys playing with the greats (as these three gentlemen undoubtedly are). I'm quite unfamiliar with the music, but this is love at first sight.
Cheers,
EJ

I’d say picky, that list of cellists reminds me of the line attributed to Wilde, “I am an man of simple tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.”
Now Playing........
Tori Amos - Boys For Pele
via CD player......... Tori on deck once again, loving her music this afternoon......
Tidal. Nadia Reid - Listen To Formation, Look For The Signs
Adele 21 WAV CD rip
Still catching up with the 2010s, my first listen to this,
I recognised the 2 big hits, mainly from shop radios and thinking must listen to her, great voice. Much like my view on 19, she writes great songs, yep self-revelatory singer- songwriter relationship songs, but when it’s as good as this I think that’s great. Wish I’d noticed this and 19 when they came out, she is a very very talented musician and these albums are superb.
Earlier this evening, pl
Ese and the Vooduu People, The Bootleg Series Vol. 1, WAV download.
Fancied another big voice with music and soul, Ese’s got serious pipes. Kevin tells me the band had never played together before, I am amazed, good songs, they sound tight, and she’s amazing Bluesy soul rock, worth a listen, you,may well be hooked, I am.
The Mekons - Journey to the End of Night - WAV CD rip
The Mekons started as a punk band in the U.K. in 1977, by the time of this 2000 album they were scattered across California, Chicago and the U.K. No longer defiantly unable to play, their instruments, they're a tight rock band with a fine violinist. Musically this is reggae beat and folk rock, with Zappa/Velvets influenced numbers. Intelligent rock, the Mekons have been going for 40: years to date, and every album’s worth a listen.
