Ásgeir - Afterglow (from Afterglow)

His first album - Into The Silence (lyrics translated by John Grant) - was lovely. This has similar vocals, with more angular, offset beats. Interesting, working my way into the album...

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Best Of.

Just some swamp rock from CCR ..................... recent plays of Slim Harpo's album reveals just where their guitar sound and swamp

  rock vibe came from. (IMHO)

A St Matthew Passion with some impressive moments (Bernarda Fink and Johannes Weisser, and most of the choral numbers), but doesn't cohere all that well as a performance. The spatial recording was meant for surround playback and doesn't translate all that well in stereo, to the disadvantage of some of the singers. At the moment - my preferences for the Matthew Passion seem to vary from year to year - my preferred recordings are Herreweghe II and Gardiner. Listening to the stereo SA layer of the SACD.

Cheers,

EJ

My preference is for the (2001) Harnoncourt, a searing performance. I’m off to Birmingham on Friday to hear Ex Cathedra perform it.

Another disc from the 15-LP Atlantic Jazz box set. The perfect antidote to my culinary disasters!

Psychic Lemon - Frequency Rhythm Distortion Delay - Tidal

Giving this a stream after seeing Stevee having a listen. An album title obviously inspired by their experimentation with different Ethernet cables to their streamers. Heavy psychedelic rock, good challenging music, driving bass heavy rhythms, interesting and enjoyable, I ‘ll give it another go and probably buy it. In retrospect maybe I shouldn't have gone straight from the Händel, it took a couple of tracks to adjust.

A fine song from a great film.

Until recently, only available in Japan. Interesting, and rather wonderful.

Nick Drake - Way to Blue

I caught a snatch of a recording of Nick's mother, Molly Drake, playing on Late Junction the other night. I was surprised and pleased to hear how much of his intonation was hers.

So I'm playing this CD to remind me of them both.

I wonder where he would be now if he had lived? One of the great 'what ifs'.

Steely Dan - Live, Bristol Va. 1996, WAV CD Rip

From the 3 CD tribute to Walter Becker box set, the Dan live. Great stuff, some of their best songs, Becker and Fagen on superb form, a crack band really nailing the songs. Slightly disconcertingly Becker’s voice sounds just like Tom Lehrer in his between songs comments.

Dr Dre - 2001

I realise that Hip Hop isn't for everyone, but I'm getting it and even to my cloth ears the majority of the recordings are very well done.

The likes of Dr Dre and Kanye West are perfectionists when it comes to producing.

Malcolm Arnold, 5th Symphony, LSO Hickox. I bought this CD A Loooonng time ago on the recommendation of Richard Shahinian (website). I think I played it once, liked it, but never played it again until tonight. This man knew how to use the immense possibilities of a full Orchestra to create some incredible sounds. I suspect he never quite took himself seriously as a Symphonist, but on this evidence he had no reason to doubt his worth. A superb Symphony by any standards and this recording ( as Dick Shahinian spotted) is absolutely demonstration class. If I were demoing my system for sale this would be the perfect recording.

David Bowie - TRAFO Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - 2012 remastered vinyl

Very near the Rats on the shelves, and after listening to Hunky Dory at the weekend , I felt the need to listen to Bowie’s other towering creation. A stunning stunning album, from the ominous notes leading to Ziggy announcing the end of the world in 5 years, to his wail in Rock and Roll suicide, it’s a parade of great rock songs, Bowie’s voice and Mick Ronson’s axe  a perfect pair of leads, and the rest of the Spiders playing brilliantly. I nearly put it back on again, it’s hard to stop listening.

I think it was Annie Nightingale who picked this as her lifetime favourite album. Hard to argue. Agree too about Mick Ronson’s vital contribution. It wouldn’t be the album it is without him.
