On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Now Playing.........
Eberhard Weber - Fluid Rustle
Eberhard Weber (bass, tarang), Bonnie Herman (voice), Norma Winstone (voice), Gary Burton (vibraharp, marimba), and Bill Frisell (guitar, balalaika(.
via CD player......... A nice mellow wake up this morning with 'Quiet Departures,' 17+ minutes of joy, what a beautiful way to start the day!
Top-notch blues from a master, on original 1992 vinyl:
Now Playing.........
Bill Fisell . . . . . In Line
Bill Frisell (electric and acoustic guitars), and Arild Andersen (bass)
via CD player......... Nothing like some Bill Frisell in the morning and his opening track 'Start' providing a helpful suggestion........
Deep electronica delights.
Sonny Fortune: Serengeti Minstrel. Spacey, funky, groovy jazz from 1977.
Some Kate, on original 1986 vinyl. Back when this was released, I worked at Tower Records in Piccadilly Circus, as a buyer among other things, and I remember sometime the next year, Graham, the chief EMI rep, saying that this was EMI's biggest-ever seller on CD, outstripping even DSOTM at the time (although the Floyd album has since eclipsed it). IIRC, I think this was the first KB album to be released on CD (though I might be wrong) and it was TV advertised, so that would have helped sales in the run up to Xmas. The cover may have attracted a certain demographic as well...
Playing on Vinyl on 4AD Records - Great Debut album by The Cocteau Twins from 1982 - " Blood Bitch " is great
Second best psychedelic album of the 90s, now 20 years ago.
Now Playing......
Warren Zevon - The Wind
Streaming on TIDAL........ Going with a mention from JOERAND and taking Warren's 'The Wind' out for a spin.
Just in case anyone was left wondering what the best number one psychedelic album of the 90s was..
e.s.t. - Live in Hamburg
A guy I never see posted on here much.
Fabulous singer songwriter who has been consistent in the quality of his albums over the years.
Fantastic vocal range.
This one is from 2004
(2000)
Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain
This and Tales of Us are still my favourites by her Frapnness, her debut starts off with some wonderful sultry, breathy electronic soundscapes backing up that great voice.
1974 - Vinyl - US pressing...
Before The Flood - Live: Dylan and The Band at their best.
(1972)
Stephen Stills - Manassasas
Because it's been a while and I fancied a listening to this old Stills album, up there with his early best.
On vinyl . . . of course!
Miles Davis - Sorcerer
Having been enthralled by two successive nights of Champions League quarter final ties, I didn't find the prospect of watching the Gunners in the Europa cup against the Ruskies at all attractive so thought a bit of Ray Lamontagne was likely to entertain me more.
Chronic Town
REM's Vinyl Debut - It came out a couple of months before Murmur - A 5 track mini album - Playing on Vinyl on IRS Records 1982
Now playing.......
An Evening with Foy Vance - Live in London
Streaming on TIDAL....... Recently saw this mentioned and placed in the TIDAL queue, just now getting around to taking it out for a spin. Sounding mighty fine......
Random bars and random picks. Tomorrow's friday. Isn't it?
Having resurrected my LP12 I'm looking at old albums with my young daughter who is far more interested in the vinyl than my son who is hiding away playing Minecraft on an iPad!
So today's selections as I only had a couple of prog rock type albums in the house, rest in storage!
From a trip to Sainsbury's to get milk she fancied this to try (asn an 80's Smash hits compilation):
Sounds great on vinyl - very clean pressing - many of these songs are very catchy, many I'd have never bought on original release, but just show (to me at least) how poor modern pop music is, frankly banal most of it.
Quik trip to my storage and grabbed a few accessible LPs/
Next up - Tom Jones on vinyl! (daughter has been doing 60's history/culture in school). Alreday covered the Beatles on streaming yonks ago.
A Mono Decca FFRR pressing from 1968 I got secondhand in Ireland sometime in the 90's - there's even a little coloured dot on the back to indicate Mono or Stereo!
(Deram image via Amazon not Decca pressing).
Next, Spiceworld - must admit I had a soft spot for some of the Spice Girls' songs - Viva Forever is simply gorgeous pop, we're on our 3rd play:
Later I think we'll be exploring Queen's Greatest Hits, Grease soundtrack, Tears For Fears, Kim Wilde, Sade, more Tom Jones perhaps - a lot of it very cheesy but good sing along fun.
Booker T. & the MGs - McLemore Avenue : WAV CD rip
1st play, ordered after Sloop John B played it a few days ago. Excellent instrumental reworking of the songs from Abbey Road, played by one of the great house bands. Really enjoyable, Cropper’s playing on Something is sublime, one of the great masters of the Tele.
1964 - UK (mono)pressing...
