Fink's - Sunday Night Blues Club

I saw the love here. So I bought the album. I like it straight away. It sounds a bit lo-fi to me though. Maybe that's part of the charm...

Beethoven Serenade, Trio, Duo, WAV CD rip

Woodwind led early Beethoven, the Serenade for flute, violin and viola, the trio for piano flute and bassoon, and the duo for clarinet and bassoon. Despite the latter 2 pieces being  WoO. Works not deserving an Opus number, all three are lovely compositions. I heard the trio this year at a concert at the Halifax Square Chapel, a rae treat as it’s an unusual combination of instruments. Early Beethoven, so not the massive scale/structure and innovation of the greatest works, but especially the 2 WoOs show a similar transition from Classical to Romantic to the Haydn I played earlier. Lovely music, enjoyable for its attractiveness but also complex, well played by some very good musicians, good album.

Carole King - Tapestry

A classic that I haven't played for far too long, takes me back to days with my first 'proper' girlfriend who gave me this album on my birthday.

Skid Row - Skid, WAV CD rip

Not the punk band, the ‘60s Irish band probably most important for being Gary Moore’s first major band. Rock songs, well written, the songwriter and vocalist was the bass player (Brush Shiels), so they can be bass dominated, but then Gary Moore’s guitar sings out, and his lines add soul to the songs. Good rock trio album. I was sure that this is where Phil Lynott and Gary Moore first worked together, (well pre-Thin Lizzy) but I can’t spot Lynott on any credits on this or their other album.

One of the greatest albums, how many wonderful songs are on this? And she sings them all so  well, nailing the emotion.

Spot on , Eoin. I might have to investigate a Hi-Res version of this one.

Restoration, the songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Nashville Edition, WAV CD rip

Does what it says on the cover, some of the finest country singers singing Elton/Bernie songs. Elton John and Bernie Taupin have written some wonderful songs, give them to Chris Stapleton, Rhonda Vincent/Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Emmylou/Roseanne Cash, Don Henley/Vince Gill and this is what you get. Miley Cyrus is competent on Bitch is Back, a few songs are well sung, and most of the album is amazing.

Eoin, you may already be aware but another Paul Rodgers album of note is Muddy Waters' Blues. An album of well known blues songs with guest guitarists of the calibre of Dave Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Steve Miller, Brian May and many more on different tracks.Rodgers is in fine form/voice and very recommendable. Many apologies if this post costs you more cash

After seeing Eoin's post regarding Restoration the covers album of Elton John/Bernie Taupin songs it reminded me to give an earlier tribute album Two Rooms a spin. Not every track works but a pleasant enough experience in general.
