At the wake following my cousin's funeral yesterday, his wife had set out his quite extensive CD collection inviting people to make a donation to BHF and take some home and remember John when listening. Our collections of progressive music overlapped quite a lot as my listening was influenced by him in the early days. I chose just three, this being one of them, 'Nude' by Camel, which fills a gap in my collection.

I’m not sure if “Like” is the right thing to do to this post, but what a lovely thing for his wife to do. Music has such emotional resonance, there are some artists and songs that are inextricably linked to my late wife in my mind, and that’s a beautiful way for your cousin’s wife to give people something that will always remind them of him in the right way, wonderful idea!

Yes, it was a lovely thing to do. My wife says she now has an idea of what to do with my collection!

That, may I say, is the perfect gesture. So sorry to hear of your loss but your cousin will now live on through the music he loved, so thoughtfully presented by his wife, and through the BHF, giving something to others.

What a lovely story and it must give you some comfort at this difficult time.

I think the standard of the Eurovision acts is improving year on year and the lighting show is often impressive.  The oddball acts that are plain naff are fewer I feel.

Trouble is too many of the acts could be quite good as 'tribute acts' for particular styles, but these are often just dated, and then you get weird stuff like the Czech entry who looked like Thomas Dolby going to high school.  There are often good ballads/power ballads each year they'd just not be good commercial fodder.

Ultimately the crazy Björk like Israeli chicken clucking woman will probably win just because she's bizarre.

Never seen the UK song before, but a powerful performance spoiled by a fool.  You have to feel for her, but she handled it well and recovered to finish very impressively.

Interestingly I started watching on YouTube not the BBC and it was quite nice not to have Graham Norton wittering on.  I do miss Terry Wogan, at least he made me laugh the ruder and more inebriated he got as the night wore on.

Paul Tortelier and Eric Heidsieck, Beethoven Cello Sonatas, 1986 vinyl reissue

As the sticker shows, this cost me £6.99 from (Hebden Bridge) Oxfam a couple of weeks ago. The Beethoven cello sonatas are lovely music, the first 2 being lovely Classical style compositions with fantastic piano lines, by the 4th and 5th we’re at late Beethoven with the complex emotional depth and self-revelation of his final works, sublime music. Tortelier’s Cello and Heidsieck’s Piano interplay superbly, great understanding of both the music and each other.

The records have lots of crackling on the 1st 2 minutes or so per side, I must get an RCM for ,y second hand vinyl, otherwise SQ is excellent, especially for an early (1986) digital remaster.

I saw Tortelier a couple,of times in the ‘80s, the second being a Prom about a year before his death, he was a master, his incredible controlof his instrument allowed him to show his deep love and understanding of the music.

Gregg Allman - Southern Blood, 1st run vinyl

Great album, the Southern Rock pioneer recording his final album just before he died, one original number, and a set of covers of his great contemporaries and friends, Dylan, Dead, Browne... Songs thinking about life and death, but never preachy, Just adult and intelligent. His voice is as wonderful as it ever was, the band are superb, this album is a joy from start to end, deep songs superbly sung and played.

Well what a joke - yet again won by a truly dire song.

There were several good songs tonight - I particularly liked the Austrian song and the singer seemed very humble - dislike the way he was pushed away by a 'minder' when he tried to congratulate the Israeli winner near the end.

2 things - you insult the superb Bjork (but I get your drift)  & that has to be the best advert yet to turn Remainders into Brexiteers

The Rails - Fair Warning, original U.K. vinyl

I’m seeing them tomorrow, so revising their 2014 debut album. Classic English folk-rock, the two leads Kami Thompson and James Wallbourne share vocals, some shared and some solo, he’s a very fine guitarist as accompaniment and as lead, she’s got a fine voice as has he. They arrange a couple of traditional numbers, and write others that could be trad while being totally contemporary in their themes. Lovel6 alb7m

I love most of Björk's stuff, no insult intended - just thought this artist looked a bit like her Homogenic style (Dawn French claims the Israeli is copying her).

I think Eurovision has been hijacked - while it's all a bit of fun and not serious music in recent years we've had highly political voting and now it seems it's akin to a 'pride festival'.

The winning song was unusual to say the least, I just felt the 'jury' votes were surprisingly good for the top half a dozen and I'd have been delighted had Austria won, the public votes thereafter proved to me how crazy voting systems are when the public just vote for bizarre/diversity and not the talented acts and there were a few.  Austria, Sweden, Norway, Hungary, Estonia and many others had merits that appealed for the 'show' it is whereas Israel didn't.

I think the idiot running on stage during the UK performance is lucky he wasn't shot, especially wearing a back pack with who knows what in it around the time of a terrorist attack in Paris.

Am listening to the new Tracey Thorn release, Record.  It's a strong album, well-played and well-recorded.  Her voice sounds great.  Kind of reminds me of her previous band Everything But the Girl.  Streaming on Tidal.

June In The Fields - Miles behind, miles ahead.

James Forest (guitar, vocals), Mélissa Brouillette (vocals)

Streaming on TIDAL.......  Going with a mention from BERT SCHURINK earlier in the day and taking the album out for a spin.  The first few tracks work perfectly for a late evening listen with the two vocalists and single guitar works quite well.
