Joan Armatrading - Not Too Far Away

I saw Joan on the Graham Norton Show perform the first track off her new album and was quite impressed. I have now just listened to the entire album on Tidal. The problem for me is Joan has never quite lived up to the sheer quality of her fist two albums and some of the subsequent albums were quite disappointing for me.

Not Too Far Away is better and Joan appears to have retained much of the power and command of her vocals. I need to give this one a few more listens but on first impressions, it has potential. As with much of her material, the more you listen, the more you appreciate her clever, and often complex, songwriting.

You was robbed!

Of at least 99p and an awful lot of street cred.

Clive, Tell that to [@mention:12970396060785205]. Just to go a step further, I don’t like the rock songs on the album, some of which are just loud and banal! Not sure what that will do to my street cred.

Fortunately, this thread is a very diverse street! It has some sense of humour, though I’m still waiting for [@mention:6917038660692026] to respond to the bit about Italian Eurovision entrants. Nothing like a bit of self deprecation!

Phil,

I don’t and never careed about EV. As for  Italian music, an ex girlfriend (Italian) “introduced” me to people like Zucchero and Carmen. Things you do to get...(!)

Long before that, I did have a soft spot for PFM( Premiata Forneria Marconi) back in the late 70’s early 80’s, Italian prog at its best.

Stay cool.

Cheers,

Tony

Tony, EV has been too political for years. I was impressed by your knowledge of Italian entrants of years ago, which you have now explained. Thank you. I hope you have fond memories.

The first song you quoted was also popularly known as Volare. I’m sure many of us older members will remember it, even if now it is best forgotten. Carmen Consoli also released a song called Confusa e Felice, so I tried to explain the switch from listening to Led Zeppelin to Gigliola Cinquetti thus so! Must try harder as no one seemed to get it!

Apye, This is one of my favourite Mike Oldfield LPs bought from Oxfam in the last year or so. A very talented musician. You have prompted me to play it, which I have been meaning to for a while.

This CD was on the door mat when I got home, so straight in the CD5 XS it went as I couldn't wait for it to rip.

This is a Norwegian Post/Art Prog band, who are to my mind, Superb.

I really should use the CDP more as this is sounding Sweet.

Hi, I would be really interested to hear what you think to this compared their others - same high standard?  Thanks to Stevee these have also become a firm favourite of mine. The recent(-ish) Calexico didn't quite do it & the same with the newer Beach House so I am hoping that this is on form.

For some reason I felt a strong urge to reach for some (superb) Phil Collins, but instead hit the play-button on this lovely album.

Not their finest hour, Clive. Have a listen to Black & Blue instead.

Just ripped this and just as you say....it’s a nice Filip at the end of the day from great rockers.

Hi Paul, having now played this twice back to back, I am impressed. This for me is better than Molok and up there with Demon. It moves along really well and has the Gazpacho sound I love. I think this will be played quite a bit here in Slim towers. All the best, Simon.

Diana Krall - The Girl In The Other Room

Having a blast today playing some of my favourite albums to prove to myself, if I already didn't know, the superiority of firmware version 4.6 over 4.4.

This is my favourite DK album and possibly one her most underrated. Well, sorry, I am right and everyone else is wrong! This is a belter and sounding even more wonderful via my NDS with 4.6 firmware.

I haven't listened to this album in many years - Joan Armatrading's self titled album from 1976 - like many I suspect, I rather overdosed on it.  But it's a great album, and I've always loved the track Save Me. Gave it a clean and it has come up almost like new.

And so, it inevitably led to this;

In spite of the digital recording, the Masterdisk cut LP absolutely spanks the CD.

DK gets a bad press at times and unjustified in my opinion.

One of my favourites as well, and you've inspired me to also play this album. In DSD64 it's sounding gorgeous!
