What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)

On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Alice Coltrane: Ptah, The El Daoud. Powerful, spiritual jazz, with Joe Henderson and Pharaoh on tenors.
John Mellencamp. Life Death Love And Freedom. On CD + DVD from 2008. First listen. The 14 tracks here certainly focus on the album title's topics; reflections on a life lived and the time remaining. Somber tones, melodies, and lyrics, yet not without underlying hope for the future. Mellencamp's gravelly smoker's voice fit the mood well and his duets with Karen Fairchild are outstanding. Unlike his commercial Cougar stuff this is not big on toe tapping, rather an album that envelops you with it's emotional realism and artistic grit.
I've been listening to Colli's new Scarlatti disc for the past weeks - he imbues the sonatas with depth and soul like few must have done before him. Addictive!
Cheers
EJ
I first saw this talented lady on the Jools Holland show. This album oozes class. Pure quality music, whether on vinyl or CD.
Started the morning with this. Hoped it would be overwhelming, but on first run it’s good but not yet overwhelming - perhaps it’s requires more runs
I like her tone and playing a lot...
Ryley Walker - Primrose Green
I saw it here yesterday. Great quietly, with a late breakfast now.
Martin Taylor - Portraits
Continuing the plangent theme but with more polish. And if there's one thing my life lacks...
Berliner Philharmoniker - Albinoni : Adagio / Pachelbel / Canon.
Well, there's a first for me ............ classical music.
I pushed the wrong button in the car yesterday, and found that I had strayed from my usual 6Music onto a classical station, and was
so taken with the music, that I left it where it was, to the point that, on reaching home, I remained in the car outside my house until it
had ended.
Who knows, this could be the start of a new musical adventure, chez Dave ................. blimey!
On vinyl, from last year's The Catalogue 3D box, Tour De France. The SQ of this is stunning and there are some great moments both on this album and in the set, but overall I can't shake the feeling that this was a bit of a waste of everyone's time and money...
Always enjoy a bit of Sly and Robby on any album they weave their magic on - This is great to cook breakfast too.
Playing on Vinyl on Virgin Records 1979 - Technics SL 1210 is digging deep into Robbie Shakespears Bass lines
GoGo Penguin - v2.0
System workout. And a happy memory of seeing them live a year or so ago.
I should dip in here a bit more methodically:
really enjoying this one, great recommendation

The new vinyl re-release. Sounds OK, but I think the '71 UK Starline and the '76 Japanese pressing (in a wonderful gatefold sleeve) will remain my go-to pressings.
I love Relics - it's such a random collection of tracks, but somehow it works and is tremendous fun.
You Made It Right - The Ozark Mountain Daredevils (from ‘It’ll Shine When It Shines’)
Not just one of the best band names ever...

Agreed - seeing her in London (again) later this year. Should be great.
Phantom Limb - Live In Bristol.
Stunningly good band, on the Naim label, with singer Yolanda Quartey having one of the most distinctive voices around.
This live album simply oozes quality, and shows them at their best.
Reasonable sounding Live bootleg of early REM - The Chronic Town E.P and Murmur album tracks are there + a cover of The Velvet Undergrounds " There she goes again " - Playing on Vinyl

Gary Moore - Ballads & Blues - 1982 / 1994.
Just ordered from The River for pennies ................ great shout, DrMark.
Z Z Top - Antenna.
I know I posted this only yesterday, but I've now had an extended listen, and I'm loving this album.
It's something of a "back to basics" approach, following their dalliance with synths, and Billy Gibbons' trademark use of pinched
harmonics is very much to the fore, and it is, as I said yesterday, utterly tonetastic!
Not one of their better known albums, but for any Tops fans on here, this one is unmissable.
Best of all, it's on Tidal, so you can have a listen, before committing to mere pennies on The River.

You can never play too much Tops, Dave! This one as you say is a good example of their mid 90's albums and sits well alongside the later Rhythmeen and then XXX (triple X) which to my mind is a much underrated album, it's worth it for the Elvis tribute and impersonation alone!
On vinyl...

Z Z Top - Rhythmeen.
What a good idea!
