On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Soccer Mommy - Clean
Steve Kuhn - Mostly Coltrane
- Steve Kuhn - Piano
- Joe Lovano - Sax
- David Finck - Bass
- Joay Baron - Drums
Jazz Explosion - part of the Lansdowne Jazz series on original vinyl from 1969;
The perfect way to accompany a mid morning coffee on a Saturday morning. All killer, no filler. Some of these tracks were only found in stereo form on this compilation, the original releases probably being bought in such criminally small numbers that they didn't warrant a stereo issue. The Mike Taylor Trio's wonderful track, Abena, is a real highlight, and this album is far and away the best way to hear it (or if you prefer mono, you can track down the original mono album, just so long as you can afford the four figure sum copies command today). Superbly vibrant sound quality too. A desert island disc, and one that naturally led to a spin of this...
Joe Harriott and Amancio D'Silva Quartet's Hum Dono vinyl reissue on Vocalion;
Another masterpiece of British Jazz. Originals are super-rare, and again, you'll need to pay at least a four figure sum for a good copy from the usual places. However, the really good news for all music lovers (rather than investment managers) is that Vocalion have released this wonderful vinyl reissue. Nicely pressed on 180g vinyl and (hooray) packed inside an anti-static inner, it's reputedly cut from analogue tape by Noel Summerville at 3345 Mastering in London, and it sounds great. Oh and the best bit... it's still available from the Vocalion site for a bargain £15!
So what are waiting for...?
Fink - Sunday Night Blues Club
Then Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopfler - All The Roadrunning
The latter a bit less angsty

Dan Steel, mentioning Liverpool reminded me of my trip to it a few years ago. A friend of mine made me a sampler with a few songs before that trip including ...

The Barr Brothers - "The Barr Brothers" (2011) wonderful Canadian band with a mixture of rock, americana, and pop. Brad Barr is a genius-original in my book. In the last seven years, this band has been making music I cannot live without.
I am really liking this. Another great band that have passed me by.
Jeff, I know it can be a pain explaining the '....why....?' of this thread, but it was your last comment that made this an irresistible first listen for me. Without a comment, I may well have overlooked this talented band. I guess I need to be more inquisitive.
As always, thanks to you from this music lover for posting on here.
Superb live band, I saw them a couple of years back when they supported Calexico at the Philharmonic Liverpool. Looking forward to seeing them at the Leaf next month.????
(1975)
Some banter here on the forum about Stephen Stills earlier in the week has prompted me to cruise into a hot fine Saturday afternoon with 'Stills 2.
Blind Pilot - "3 Rounds And A Sound" (2008)

I'm a self-confessed jazz wimp. My jazz usually has to come at the music from the rock side of things. As such I really like Ian Carr's work - both with Nucleus and various Neil Ardley's stuff (Kaleidoscope Of Rainbows, Harmony Of The Spheres). I do need to explore outside of that range though.
But having said that I'm a big fan of the Joe Harriott-John Mayer Double Quintet (of Meet The Family fame):
Nice debut of the band of Go-Betweens Robert Forsters son. New album coming this fall.
