Ian, How many cassette tapes do you have? I used to have an AIWA cassette deck and it used to sound so much warmer than my old Technics CDP. Wishing you a good day. Minh

Aloysius - Cocteau Twins (from ‘Treasure’)
I don’t think they made a better complete album than this. Sure, it’s fey and occasionally whimsical, but oh my - that voice...
Hi Nick,
Liked your Comments about Aloysius its fabulous. The best track on Treasure.I saw them on the Treasure tour in 1984 and they where superb.Love this video of Aloysius and the goose flying at the start. It's magical. You can understand why Massive Attack wanted Liz Fraser to do the Vocals on Teardrop. As you say what a voice.
Thanks for posting - Cheers Ian
Massive Attack - Mezzanine.
Someone mention Massive Attack? ^
Sounding better than ever here, since the 4.6 firmware update.
Vinyl reissue on Speakers Corner 2010 - One of his best. ????

I agree, 4.6 is pure finesse ????

Hi Ming,
I think its over a 1000 now.Started around 1976 and recently got 10 boxes containing 40 a box from my father who has gone into a care home.So I am slowly going threw his recordings.
Cassettes are great fun and you can get some pretty amazing recordings off a Nakamichi in good condition. Its strange with sound off cassettes as they do give a nice warmness to recordings.Even bad digital recordings off Compact Disc lose some of that Digital glassy feel to them - if that makes sense.I am not very good at describing sound !
If you are tempted to get a Nak or any other Cassette deck. There is loads of enthusiasm for the format here.Especially from Richard Dane and Kevin W.
Hope all is well with you - Wishing you a good day
Cheers Ian

I don't want to expand too much on a topic which has already been discussed over on the streaming forum, but I'm hearing much more in the way of subtle detail, which, it seems, was previously buried in the mix.
There's stuff on this album which I'd never been aware of before the update .......... anyway, it's all good.

Neither do I wish to touch upon the debate but my appraisal is similar to your experience. It has resolved information that used to get lost in the chaos (I have a penchant for music that is complex and involving) ????

What a coincidence, I've recently acquired 10 boxes of CDs (mainly singles with some fantastic remixes) but I know what you mean about the sound of tape: I used to also copy music from my CDP to cassette tape for some recordings because it had an uncanny ability to soften the accents that were prominent in sibilant CDs. For the handsome sum of a grand, what would you suggest I buy? I don't mind buying pre-loved if it has come from a good home ????
Hi Minh,
Your in a nice place with a grand in your pocket.I would be looking at a Nakamichi but one which has been serviced. If you want something a bit cheaper the Aiwa F 770 or F 990 are nice.I think you could get a F 990 for £ 300 off E Bay.Here is a pic of one.Richard Dane has a F 770 - I think.
You should post this in Hi-Fi Corner as you will get a lot of good advice over their.
Hope this helps you
Listening to this magnificent album...
Always enjoy this album - Mickey Thomas did a great job on vocals after Grace slick left. The opener "Jane" is bloody brilliant fabulous keyboard sound - Playing on Vinyl on Grunt Records 1979
Massive Attack - Heligoland.
Sometimes, you just can't have too much Massive Attack .................. locked into that Bristol groove here.
David Holmes presents The Free Association. On CD from 2002. Haven't heard this in yonks. "(Wish I Had) A Wooden Heart" remains a classic.
Ray Charles - The Ultimate Collection.
Another cheap as chips re-mastered boxset, with decent SQ, and which has all the Ray Charles you'll ever need.
75 tracks, over 3 CD's, ...................... works out at 8p per song .............. blimey!
Superb contemporary improvised music recorded live at the temple of jazz and improv, Café Oto.
Eric Clapton - Sessions For Robert J, excellent live in the studio takes on Robert Johnson songs.Knocks spots off the rather anemic Me and Mr Johnson album that proceeded it.
Now Playing......
Over the Rhine - Drunkard's Prayer
Streaming on NAS....... waking up in the living room of Karin Bergquist and Landlord Detweiler where they recorded this album. Wonderful album with acoustic guitar, bass, piano, with some electric guitar, cello, drums, horns, and horns worked in. Great songwriting and musicians and hearing Karin's voice and I was an instant fan that lead me to purchase a number of their albums. They are worth a listen.

A far more satisfying album altogether, the "one take, no overdubs" approach worked much better.
The accompanying DVD's pretty good too, IMHO.
On CD:-
Grace Jones - Island Life
Mighty Mo Rodgers - Blues Is My Wailin' Wall.
Another forum recommendation, some gritty modern blues, with decent SQ ........... great shout, chaps!
Now Playing.......
Paul McCartney - Off The Ground
Streaming on NAS.... Going back 25 years digging out Paul McCartney's Off The Ground. It has been awhile since I have taken this out for a spin.......
Freddie Hubbard - Back to Birdland
Recorded in 1982. A good post bop release by Freddie Hubbard while he was more into soul jazz at that time.
- Acoustic Bass – Andy Simpkins
- Alto Saxophone – Med Flory (tracks: 6), Richie Cole
- Drums – John Dentz
- Flugelhorn – Freddie Hubbard
- Piano – George Cables
- Trombone – Ashley Alexander
- Trumpet – Freddie Hubbard
A random pull from the CD shelves: a compilation of psych-jazz (mostly from the 1960s), featuring the likes of Dorothy ashby, Gabor Szabo, Jimmy Smith, Augur/Driscoll trinity etc
Somebody mentioned Clapton but I needed something languid:
Eric Clapton and Friends - The Breeze, An Appreciation of JJ Cale
