On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
(1978)
The Cars
The Cars eponymous new wave debut really got into my brain back in the day, I bought and enjoyed all of their early albums, what better reason than to blow the virtual dust off this one.
Charles Loos - En public, Au travers
Checking out a for me new piano trio.
1959 - Vinyl (2017) reissue...

Well this is quite good. Never heard of her before but streamed from Tidal and I liked it.
Marvellous voice and phrasing. Pretty good songs, just something not quite right in some of the production/arrangements stopping it from being a stunner, but otherwise real promise.
Played this a couple more times now.
I think it's going to be one of my faves.
Have only heard a few tracks but am liking this very much. Very fresh and cool with it.
I know what you mean about the production, listening to a Qobuz stream. I will probably invest in the CD and see if a rip is any better.
Great shout Jamie. Thanks.
To me it is over produced. The songs would come across better with a more stripped back arrangement which gave the songs a bit of air and space. The orchestral charts over shadow the music too much.
Yep, I felt the same on a couple of tracks. Sounds good in the car and on DAP through headphones, which I guess tells you how/where the production went.
Does gel more on 2nd listen on proper system mind.
Hopefully she’ll be able to carry a bit more clout on future recordings.
Still like it though, she’s a talent.
Playing on Vinyl on JSP Records 1985 - Fabulous Chicago Blues from Jimmy Dawkins
Genesis - Genesis Live, 1986 Canadian vinyl reissue
Fantastic Gabriel-period Genesis, Hackett, Rutherford and Collins all on blistering form, the much maligned Phil playing like a demon. Gabriel chilling and charismatic, some of their finest songs, The Knife is amazingly powerful and affecting here. Such a shame the rumoured Supper’s Ready wasn't put on this, this band in this form must have been awesome on it.
I picked this up yesterday, as soon as it came out of the sleeve I could tell from the thickness it was an ‘80s pressing, how did they get such good SQ from such this slices of vinyl?
Watching them on video with Mr Springsteen reopening Ashbury Lanes the other evening triggered me to dig this out.
Now Playing.......
Cowboy Junkies - Pale Sun Crescent Moon
Streaming on TIDAL........ Following up with a second album, just love Margo Timmins vocals along with the songwriting and music from Trinity and the first couple of tracks here make the 'Cowboys Junkies' a group I need to explore more.....
(1967 | 1982)
The Beatles - The Magical Mystery Tour
Just In the mood for this MFSL half speed remaster (1982), sounding lovely a perfect fit for this evening.
Brian Eno - Ambient 1 Music For Airports
After the heat of the day.
Playing on Vinyl on Brain Records 1981 - Very Ambient album By Klaus schulze with 1 track a side
(1967 | 2017)
I just had to play another one from the fab four, this recent remaster is probably the most engaging and punchy and enjoyable of all the copies I have. It takes me right back there to the mid 60s. Thanks for the recommendation to my music guru Mr.Nick Lees who has forgotten more about music than I have ever known.
Ralph McTell and Wizz Jones, About Time - Original Vinyl
I saw Ralph and Wizz last night and picked up this double vinyl edition of their 2 recent albums. 2 of the most important figures of the British folk and blues scene of the ‘50s (Wizz) and ‘60s, both still going strong now, they played a blinder last night. This is an album of songs and writers that influenced them, an eclectic mix, Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, jug band tracks... They’re both fantastic guitarists, 2 acoustics, 2 fine singers, a set of blues, folk-blues, country songs, what more could you want?
Marianne Faithfull Broken English, streaming on Tidal. Released in 1979. The mention of the Cars first album earlier got me thinking about this as I recall playing both of them to death back in the day! Great album though and certainly of its time
Now Playing.....
Cowboy Junkies - Black Eyed Man
Streaming on TIDAL......... Spinning on with more from the 'Cowboy Junkies,' and they are sounding mighty fine........
Something gentle as the sun goes down, Diana Krall - A Night in Paris.
Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger - Folkways A Vision Revisited, Original UK vinyl
Recordings from mid-century from the Smithsonian Folkways archive. You can hear the ancestry of so much modern music on this, Leadbelly’s fantastic folk-blues, Woody’s folk/country, Seeger’s unselfconscious folk hymns. It is much more than a historical archive, Leadbelly’s Goodnight Irene swings, Woody’s Pretty Boy Floyd has immense drive, and Leadbelly’s Bourgeois Blues is Just pure blues. The recordings are pretty crackly, but the music grabs you and doesn’t let go.
Various Artists - Folkways A Vision Shared, Original UK vinyl
Following the originals with this tribute album, contemporary (1988 album) artists playing the somgs of Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly, both making great music and giving a fascinating insight into how they were influenced by the two pioneers. Dylan, Springsteen, U2, Little Richard, Brian Wilson and others make joyous music.
Art Pepper - Mucho Calor, this album has a Latin jazz feel to it and is most enjoyable.I only have it as it came in a set with Meets the Rhythm Section.
A wonderful Album Eoink. You could also have mentioned Emmylou’s version of ‘Hobo’s Lullaby’, and a great version of ‘This Land is your land’ to finish. The CD is a perfectly acceptable alternative to the LP.

It’d be very easy to list everything as a highlight I think, Taj Mahal’s version of Bourgeois Blues swings and boogies, WIllie Nelson was born to sing Philadelphia Lawyer, Sweet Honey in the Rock can do no wrong to my ears, the whole album is a joy.

Melody Godot - Currency of Man

Such an evocative album, well for me anyway. Brings back so many memories.
Just gave it a listen, it's very good. I remember the the hit single Chuck E, but never heard the entire album in all these years.
Out visiting relatives this weekend, stopped into the local record store and scored a used vinyl copy of this album, original pressing I think. Giving it a listen, excellent quality. $6 USD, yay...

John Abercrombie - Open Land
John Abercrombie (guitar), Mark Feldman (violin), Kenny Wheeler (trumpet, flugelhorn), Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone), Dan Wall (organ), and Adam Nussbaum (drums).
Streaming on TIDAL......... First time listen to Open Land and sounding mighty fine. Browsing the ECM site I saw a documentary they were releasing with the title Open Land and thought I would give the album a play.
