I saw them both in Boston touring in support of this album, great show.
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897): Annika Treutler, piano
Variationen und Fuge über ein Thema von Händel, op. 24
Fantasien, op. 116
Brahms/Busoni: Orgelchoralvorspiele op. 122 (various)
When it comes to the greatest three sets of piano variations you have Bach's Goldberg, Beethoven's Diabelli, and then Brahms' Händel variations. While Beethoven may have had the chutzpah to outdo Bach by writing 33 variations to Bach's 30, Brahms reverentially tips his hat to both by avoiding competition. Brahms settles on 25 variations plus a fugue.
Brahms saved some of his most profound solo piano music until 4-5 years prior to his death. These 20 pieces being Op. 116 - Op. 119. A pleasure to listen to Op. 116 here.
