What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)

On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Etta James - At Last - The Best of Etta James.
Sadly under appreciated soul singer, perennially second best to Aretha, but what a voice!
Hi Res official download.
Ray Davies, Our Country Americana II, WAV CD rip
My second listen to the new album from the great singer-songwriter, it’s enjoyable, a concept album about his relationship with America (I think), some classic Davies lyrics, wide range of musical styles, it hasn't gelled as an album for me yet. I think it may well be a grower.
Jon Hopkins - Singularity
Giving this a first listen via Tidal.
I happened upon an article 'The Best Albums of 2018 so far' as recommended by BBC Radio 6.
Interesting and quite different to my usual suspects.
Elton John - Peachtree Road, the follow up to the return to form that was Songs From the West Coast. It's not as good ,but ok for recent Elton and his voice is still in decent shape.
Now Playing..........
John Abercrombie - Timeless
John Abercrombie (guitar), Jan Hammer (organ, synthesizer, piano), and Jack DeJohnette (drums).
Streaming on TIDAL....... continuing on with another guitar band leader, second time taking this album out for a spin.

Hybrid - Disappear Here
Why? Because its one of my favourite albums from Hybrid, broody, moody and punchy layers of electric guitars and synths and sweeping strings accompanied in places by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, it's all good to go.
I'm enjoying listening to this on with the headphones on Steve. I see that Hybrid have quite a few other albums, what would you recommend of theirs?
Paul
First disc of another £9.99 four-CD bargain from HMV. "Spanish Key" remains an all time fave.
Pete Townshend, Live at the House of Blues Chicago- WAV CD rip
Excellent live album, some covers (Dylan and Canned Heat), and a lot,of songs you’d hope to hear from him. Playing and singing well, this is a class act, no longer the tearaway, great driving powerful but mature versions of some Who classics.. A recommendation from (I think) AlanP, thanks mate.
Time it was, what a time it was....

Now Playing.......
Ali Farka Toure & Ry Cooder - Talking Timbuktu
Streaming on TIDAL......... Keeping with the guitar there this afternoon, enjoy this album quite a bit!

Hi Eoin, glad you liked it
ct posted:my favourite band and their newest release, been a fan since their first album and thought it was a bit niche until i saw this album (favourably) reviewed in the Sunday Times.......
CJs music have not always captivated me but this is a superb album. Very atmospheric and deeply poetic. Enjoy it!
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827): Jonathan Biss, piano
Piano Sonatas, Vol. 7: Nos. 2, 20, 17 ("The Tempest") & 30
I have had Volumes 1-3 on ONYX of Jonathan Biss' Complete Piano Sonatas for some time. Then the trail got cold as I watched further releases come out but on a different label (Meyer Media). Finally now after years of waiting I have Volumes 4 - 7 in front of me. Starting on Volume 7, I simply cannot believe my ears!
Stunning is putting it mildly. This is a very special series in my opinion. It looks like he records about one per year and this one will be complete at volume 9 so I have two more years until the set is complete.
Interpretation and recording are both top drawer quality and highly recommended.
Soul To Soul (1985) vinyl. Found this album recently in a used shop. Very good SQ, great tunes, and it is in very good shape.
Wings (1975) vinyl. Another find in the used shop. Haven't heard this in a while.

Hi Paul, headphones are a good way to get into their music and of course they can be cranked up to appropriate volumes... I recommend staying with their studio albums between 1999 and 2010 and avoiding the remixes which were done to showcase other artists and didn't work for me. So, there are just three more studio albums to add to Disappear Here: Wide Angle, Morning Sci-Fi and I Choose Noise. Since 2010 they have made about six movie and games soundtracks which to be fair I haven't checked out in any depth so I might just take pot luck and have a listen to one or two.

*Edit: There is also their compilation (best of?) album Classics which will give you an idea of their other work and is a good listen.
Gwenno - Le Kov
Another new discovery to me from the Radio 6 best Albums of 2018 so far article.
Interesting stuff with I believe some lyrics sung in Cornish. I will definitely give it another listen.
