What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)

On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:

Ry Cooder - Prodigal Son, a great return to form.
Not 'arf ................ though I've bought and enjoyed most of Ry's "themed" offerings over the last few years, this really is, as you rightly say, a true return to form, complete with "soul groove" backing singers, (Terry Evans RIP and Bobby King) ............. takes you back a good few years.
Mind you, I still think the "live in the studio" version of Prodigal Son is so much funkier than the album version, and I've managed to download it to a memory stick in WAV, which sounds just great via the USB port on my, (now obsolete), NDS. ![]()
Absolutely agree - areal return to form apparently encouraged by his son to make a “normal” album rather than his more political recent studios. Incidentally I had to return a red vinyl version to HMV as it was incredibly crackly. The indepednet shop’s black vinyl was much better.

Sean Rowe - Magic
Streaming on NAS........... Time for a little magic with Sean after spending a few hours with my 7 & 9 year old granddaughters at the beach, nothing like a little cold salt water on a very warm day to cool things down! Life is Grand!
That’s wonderful, had never heard of him, sounds lovely on Tidal too

Coltrane - Live at Birdland (1963)

(1969)
Continuing on with some more of their quirkery from the same collection.

Ry Cooder - The Prodigal Son.
Given a poke in the ribs by ALANP ^ , this could be the start of a Cooder evening, chez Dave ........... and this album should be in
everyone's collection .............. Really! ![]()
The Dead South - Good Company
No real idea how to describe these guys but I'm loving the banjo and track 4 is top notch.
Just need my Dominos to arrive now. God bless America.

Something from the fabs doing their psychedelic stuff, just the job on this very fine sunny evening. This one ripped from the half-speed vinyl remasters of "The Beatles - Collection" by Stan Ricker for MFSL in 1982.
My favourite beside Let It Be… Pricless lyrics…
He knows that they're the fools
They don't like him
The fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning around
Waiting for the van to come
Corporation T-shirt, stupid bloody Tuesday
Man you've been a naughty boy
You let your face grow long
Lonelady - Hinterland
Sort of modern Au Pairs, ACR, Tina Weymouth, New Order. Maybe.

Old Crow Medicine Show - 50 Years of Blonde on Blonde, WAV CD rip.
Alt-county string band OCMS playing their version of Blonde on Blonde, live recordings of their take in the whole album. It works for me, faithful versions with enough originality to not make it a bland homage, they hit the music with attack and drive and make it a fun ride. My only error is that I have to go out when this finishes and I want to hear his Bobness’s masterpiece now.

The Who - Who's Next on vinyl. Picked this up today at the used store. Super quiet, and it sounds very good. I was skeptical about the 1/2 speed mastering claim, but I'm quite happy with it.
Vinyl released 1987 - Becker’s debut album and a fine one. ????
- Bass – Charlie Haden
- Drums – Jack DeJohnette
- Guitar – Pat Metheny
- Keyboards – Kenny Kirkland
- Saxophone – Michael Brecker
Classic G Funk album from 1994 by Warren G - It's only 37 mins long but every track is strong and it flows nicely - Playing on Compact Disc on Def Jam Records - Regulate will certainly give your bass drivers a good work out ![]()

This is still my favourite Barr Brothers album, it was a fine eponymous debut. Hints a shades of Simon 'n Garfunkel and late sixties pop, folk and Americana.

IMHO his best album but personally don't think he ever made a bad one.
Courtney Barnett - Tell Me How You Really Feel
Her breezy guitars and lyrics are a great antidote to her mental health theme. Good stuff.

The Barr Brothers - The Barr Brothers. Queens Of The Breakers. Sleeping Operator.
Was about to head off into a Ry Cooder evening, chez Dave, when my attention was grabbed by the post of Stevee_S, above.
Had a quick look / listen to the video / audio clips posted, now streaming the albums via Tidal ............. these are a bit good .............
great shout, Steve.
Now ordered on The River.

Van Morrison - Down The Road.
Yet another Van album, this one a bluesy, soul offering ............ can one ever have too much Van? ........... nah, 'course not.
Dave, in your quest to fill the gaps in your VM collection can I recommend Back On Top if you have not yet acquired it?.I still think of it being recent but its from '99

Released 1995 - Zydeco, New Orleans R&B, Cajun, Rock & Roll and fine slide guitar makes this a great listen. ????
- Sonny Landreth - lead vocals, lead guitar
- Allen Toussaint - Piano
- Marce Lacouture - Background vocals
- Steve Conn - Hammond B-3 Organ
- David Ranson - Bass
- Greg Morrow - Drums and percussion
- R.S. Field - Acoustic rhythm guitar
With:
- Mark Knopfler - guitar, vocals ("Shootin' for the Moon","Creole Angel")
Chuckles and the boys (thanks Kevin W - love it!) - The Early Years - 1972 Obfuscation

Bought CD / Blu Ray from Amazon after hearing on Tidal. Its pretty much Obscured by Clouds and Live at Pompeii. The physical releases have more on them than the digital. Got it yesterday and I ripped the blu ray, which is Live at Pompeii & some assorted videos from the period and split the audio out of the Live at Pompeii section. Its a new remix apparently and in 24/96. Sounds great on both portable and home setups.
One thing that struck me is the drumming on One of These Days is top drawer. Its a very good version indeed of this song. I also watched the Pompeii film. They must have had a terrible time cleaning all that volcanic dust out of their gear afterwards. It looked like it got everywhere. Nightmare ...
On one of the other videos they are at the Brighton Dome and playing Careful With That Axe Eugene. They have a great big gong and one of the stage effects is to set fire to the gong's frame and it burns rather fiercely. All this on stage in front of a nice curtain. Happy days before health and safety! I am sure there was a bucket of sand with load of cigarette ends in nearby just in case things got out of control.
Disclaimer - I ripped it solely for my own personal use!!
Imelda May - Life. Love. Flesh. Blood
Dropping the pace somewhat.

U2 - The Joshua Tree ,still a goodie, enjoying "Bullet the Blue Sky".

Cheers, Alan, that one is on it's way as we speak.
I can't believe how cheaply I've been able to fill the gaps, pennies each, mostly ............ it's all good. ![]()

Taking a break from Coltrane with this set. Oh, wait a minute - he plays on the '58 sessions on this set too! This album really shows the massively broad range of Miles' styles.
Vinyl released 2005 - Lovely album. ????
