What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)

On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Playing on Compact Disc on Pointblank Records 1993 - Superb Albert Collins Best of Compilation - Just love the way he stretches out with his guitar work on the longer tracks.Up there with the Blues legends for me.
Prompted by a mention of Ian Drury in the 'Best jokes' thread which made me realise that I haven't listened to him for ages.
While his lyrics were always crafted with care, and often overlooked, his music was simple and bl**dy good fun. One of my regrets was never seeing Ian and Blockheads live. I bet that was an occasion to remember.

Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus
My favourite Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album. Saw them on their tour after the release of this album and it was a fantastic performance.

The Barr Brothers - Queens Of The Breakers.
Listening now to the second of three Barr Brothers albums, recommended by Stevee_S.
This one is even better than their debut, which I had on earlier .......... hypnotic layers of sound .................. Belter!
Great shout, Steve.
Totally agree. I bought this a few months ago and I can't stop playing it.
Boz Scaggs - Out Of The Blues
Boz Scaggs sings the blues! Really? Surely this is not going to work. Well I have had a couple of listens to this now, and do you know what, it ain't half bad. Although Boz it not a natural blues singer, he is pretty good and has a wonderful blues backing band.
It's a grower, for sure.
Eric Clapton - Journeyman, on SACD which is beautifully mastered.

Yes, I have tee'd this up also in Tidal, having just bought the other Barr Brothers album from the River. This could get expensive!

Difficult one as Mr cave is a very prolific writer and creative force. Definitely in my top three along with Boatman’s Call and Murder Ballads. I saw him live when he was part of The Birthday Party somewhere in the early eighties. Should really make an effort and try and catch him live again one of these days.
Heinrich Schiff, Witold Lutoslawski SO des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Lutoslawski Cello Concerto, Original U.K. vinyl
The Lutoslawski Cello Concerto always feels to me like a work of struggle, cello against orchestra, some discordant music, but also stretches of peace and beauty. Superbly played here by Schiff under the composer, with SOBR being a fine match.

If you do like "Queens Of The Breakers", and decide to visit The River, don't overlook their second album, currently available for the princely sum of 78 pence ................. go on, push the boat out Nigel.
The Barr Brothers - Sleeping Operator.

The Barr Brothers - Sleeping Operator.
Stop it Dave! I have just bought Barr Brothers debut album and Queens Of The Breakers.
You are a bad man. OK, OK I'm just going to have to listen to Sleeping Operator now! Thank goodness they don't have any other albums out at the moment!
Update:
Didn't bother to listening to Sleeping Operator. For 78p (admittedly plus a bit of postage from the US), why procrastinate. I am now the proud owner of all the Barr Brothers albums!
Cho-Liang Lin, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Swedish Radio SO, Mielsen Violin Concerto, Original U.K. vinyl
Fine Romantic Concerto, spectacular first movement and a lovely arc to a gentle finish, played with immense authority and insight by Lin, ably supported by the SRSO and Salonen, some moments of intense beauty.
Vinyl released 1969 - Stones Classic. ????
Free - Live!, why? because I read somebody praising Kossof's solo on one of the additional tracks on the remaster.

Well done, that man, ................... at these prices, you know it makes sense.
One Ian Drury album wasn't enough so have now moved onto this.
My dealer is coming round with a ND555 on Friday, so I've been thinking about what to play to compare with the NDS. This is a 24/192 download which already sounds rather good. It will be interesting to see what the ND555 brings to the party.

They sound even better live. ????
Joe Bonamassa - An Acoustic Evening at the Vienna Opera House.
Joe and ensemble play the Bonamassa songbook acoustically, and, IMHO, many of the versions are actually better than the
studio originals, ................ just listen to "Athens to Athens" for example, and with Lenny Castro's percussion ............. brilliant!
Needs to be played at realistic concert hall levels, mind.

Yes, I've been looking in vain for UK tour dates ................ seems I missed them in January, so fingers crossed for later this year.
The Bunch, Rock On, 1988 reissue vinyl
The cream of early ‘70s English folk-rock luminaries having a complete blast with rock and roll classics. Richard Thompson on guitar, Pat Donaldson on bass, drums split between Dave Mattacks and Gerry Conway, vocals split between Sandy Denny Richard Thompson and Linda Peters (later Thompson), with quite a few others. The whole album is immense fun, they all obviously love the music and are enjoying themselves immensely, and they’re all top-class musicians. Worth it just to hear Sandy singing That’ll Be The Day with RT on lead, or Sandy and Linda duetting on When Will I Be Loved.
Teenage Fanclub - Grand Prix. Bandwagonesque seems to be regarded as their masterpiece, but for me they peaked on this brilliant album (clearly influenced by Alex Chilton and Big Star).

Any opportunity to hear Sandy Denny has to be welcomed!
For all the Barr Brothers fans, there are some good live performances in the usual place on the internet.
