On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Big fan of Foals, one of the most talented bands I've ever seen live. This album is superbly recorded and sounds incredible with decent gear. A must listen. First two tracks are particularly special.

About half the album
I have this on pre-order, looking forward to it.
The Beatkes - Live at the Star Club 1962, original 1977 vinyl
Picked this up at the local record shop today for a tenner, incredibly poor quality recordings of a young raw band. The Beatles largely as a cover band, they have great raw energy and class, but the recording makes it sound like you’re listening to a great band through the emergency exit slightly propped open. I can normally listen through bad recordings, but this is a bit too much even for me. They were a good rock band I can tell.
Playing on Vinyl on Brain Records 1977 - A Porn Movie soundtrack by German early electronic maestro Klaus Schulze
Muzsikás - Blues from Transylvania, Original U.K. vinyl
Wonderful Hungarian folk group, they collected Transylvanian folk music during the 1980s and this is the result. String instruments, hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, but don’t let that put you off, it’s great stuff. Some unusual signatures help you, realise it isn’t Western European, and the non-instrumentals are mainly sung by Márta Sebestyén, who has a very pure cold voice full of emotion. Lovely music.

Frank Zappa, Hot Rats, early UK vinyl
Weirdly Tony played this an hour or so ago, I had it next to play as I bought it from the local record shop today, £7 for what seems to be a perfect condition early pressing (with knackered sleeve). Great jazz fusion with grungy guitar, FZ lets rip with some amazing solos, complex jazz rhythms which are incredibly toe-tapping, and superb musicians, brilliant stuff.
Great musicianship and CB vocals on Willie The Pimp is just the cherry on the cake.
Cowboy Junkies - All That Reckoning (2018). It's been a few days, time for another listen to my favourite 2018 album so far.
Jascha Heifetz, Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5, vinyl
Perfect classical form, lovely Mozart tunes, sophisticated variations, emotions, played brilliantly by Heifetz using his formidable technique to dig deep into the heart of the music. Superb.
First, Nils Petter Molvær - Hamada
And now, Arve Henriksen - Cartography
The latter being a recommedation of Lontano's after I had enthused about Molvær, following a gig by his band in my city, which it turned out we had both been to. Thanks.
I enjoy all the digital doings™ on top of the basic trumpet sound.
The Great Society Grace Slick - Conspicuous only in its Absence, 1980 reissue vinyl
Early West Coast psychedelic band, mainly important because Grace Slick went on to Jefferson Airplane and took Somebody to Love and White Rabbit, but this is a good album in its own right, recorded live so some obtrusive tape hiss, but Darcy Slick is a fine guitarist and Grace defined the vocal style, very good album.
Whippersnapper - Tsubo - Original vinyl
Folk quartet from the mid80s, led by the great fiddler Dave Swarbrick. Mainly trad songs, Swarbrick and the three other fine trad acoustic musicians do a great job here, English folk at its best.
Art Blakey: The Big Beat, another Blue Note classic with Morgan, Shorter and an irresistible version of 'Lester Left Town'.
Released 2006 - Disc 1 From this fine box set.????
Released 1964 - Great Sunday morning listen.
BH on R4. Best bit so far, a suggestion that Brian Cox and Alan Bennett might be the same person, with special help from Thora Hird, a cup of tea and a macaroon masquerading as a comet.
Vinyl released 1982 - Brilliant album. ????
Four Tet - New Energy
CD rip sounding sublime, just right for a sunny Sunday morning.
Duke Jordan - Flight to Jordan
One of those classic Blue Note albums. Great jazz.
- Bass – Reggie Workman
- Drums – Art Taylor
- Piano – Duke Jordan
- Tenor Saxophone – Stanley Turrentine
- Trumpet – Dizzy Reece
Started with this album this morning, a relaxing, easy album...
Saw a demo of his upcoming album, thought it might be interesting, but not so attractive...
Nice modern jazz, fresh...
Arabian atmosphere with voice as well, by far not his best album...
Great album, modern but not too artistic just focusing on nice music...
Eddie Higgins quartet - My foolish heart
Relaxing jazz by the Eddie Higgins quartet playing standards.
- Bass – Steve Gilmore
- Drums – Bill Goodwin
- Piano – Eddie Higgins
- Tenor Saxophone – Scott Hamilton
