Image result for john lennon anthology

John Lennon - Anthology, playing various tracks from the 4 cds. Many tracks sound better than the actual released version as they are devoid of some of the more questionable Lennon production techniques.

Lennon or Phil Spector production techniques? If the latter, then anything would sound better.

Both, I think that leaving Lennon's voice natural without echo or reverb betters the released versions.Every thing sounds more intimate stripped of the additions that are added to the tracks to make a "record".The Mind Games material for instance is improved IMO.

Charles Lloyd (tenor saxophones), Bobo Stenson (piano), Anders Jormin (double-bass) and Billy Hart (drums).

Streaming on TIDAL........ Continuing on with the exploration of Charles Lloyd's early ECM catalogue releases. This album from 1993 and the opening track 'Nocturne' was mighty sweet!

1969 - UK pressing....

They don’t do compilations like they used to.

That looks a good'n, Tony. I don't remember seeing that album before.

Bin find at my local record shop, Steve.  Couldn’t resist the cover. Some familiar faces there with mr Rogers up front and the ever so smiley and bearded mr Anderson at the back. How could I resist investing 3 quid on it? Quick clean on the RCM and it is as good(iiish) as new!

Haven't seen that for years. Really good album.

Blimey, that brings back some memories!  This album was essential listening for us 5th formers back in 1969/70. I have the 2 subsequent Island label compilations on vinyl - "Nice enough to eat" and "Bumpers". I remember buying the latter on the way home after completing my last "O" level exam. I also have a CD from 1992 called "Nice enough to join in" which was a selection taken from "You can....." and "Nice enough....."

These 3 albums showcased all the artists I was into at that time and even to this day. I also recall that there was a fourth sampler released in 1971 called "El Pea" - not sure why I didn't buy this. I also have a 2005 cd box set called "Strangely Strange But Oddly Normal - an Island anthology" which contains tracks from all 4 of the previous albums. Worth buying just for "I keep singing that same old song" by Heavy Jelly! At the time, nobody seemed to know who they were and I'm still not sure to this day. Time to dig this one out, methinks!

Art Pepper - Laurie's choice

This album contains songs from concerts Art Pepper gave between 1977 and 1982. The selection was made by his wife Laurie. She recorded the concerts (on a Sony TCD 9). Art Pepper is in excellent form on these songs.

  Van Morrison - Avalon Sunset.

I've only recently started listening seriously to Van's music, (no, don't ask, since I don't know either!), and have been stocking up

  cheaply via The River.

There's some fabulous stuff there on the twenty or so albums I've purchased so far, but this one is really doing it for me, and stands

head and shoulders above the others, IMHO.

  Can't stop playing it.

Dave, I am a big Van fan and have many of the albums you have recently been collecting. My favourite Van album is The Philosophers Stone. Not sure if you have got around to this classic Van album (IMHO), if not I would urge you to give it a listen. It is a double album of 33, yes 33, tracks, all belters again IMHO.

Hi, Nigel, I've tracked down a copy of this double album, and it's on it's way .......... not the cheapest, but, hey ho.

Yer a bad man, as you've told me often enough!

Don't be so tight Dave. Sounds like you have had good value out of Van albums from the River so far. Time now to stump up some proper cash!

Would be interested to know what you think of The Philosopher's Stone.

Hi Nigel,

Arrived this morning, ripped and streaming now, on my "broken" NDS.

Van Morrison - The Philosopher's Stone.

It's only my first listen, but this album has grabbed my attention from the off.

Very bluesy vibe, which suits me down to the ground, and I'm finding it hard to believe that many of these choons were rejected

  for inclusion on subsequent releases.

Great shout, Nigel, .............. ya baad man!

Glad you are enjoying The Philosopher's Stone. I only listen to it when I have plenty of time as I usually end up enjoying most or all 33 trax!

I am listening to Van's The Healing Game at the moment which I have recently bought, together with Avalon Sunset, which is all your fault . I used to listen to these on Tidal, but you quite rightly highlighted these gems so I took a trip up the River.

Van's music seems so timeless to me. Such a cool dude!

The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Live At The BBC.

They were always at their best live, and this 2 CD set which arrived today, really shows off just how powerful a band they were.

I count myself very lucky to have seen them in concert, at York University, many moons ago.

Monster Movies

I played Future Days yesterday evening and thought it would be rude not to open another Can tonight this is of course their fine debut album nicely remastered which has been  'breathed on' a bit with the ol' hybrid SACD treatment. Lovely.

Freddie Hubbard - Sky Dive

Great album by Freddie Hubbard. The music is a mixture of jazz, soul and funk. He has a great supporting cast with e.g. Keith Jarrett on piano and George Benson on guitar.
