What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)
Posted by: Richard Dane on 31 December 2017
On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Bernard Herrmann - Outer Space Suite
In the 50s Herrmann wrote a series of pieces for The Twilight Zone and then put them together for this short but sweet suite.
There's an excellent digital release (Qobuz link here), but be wary of the other release that combines it with Herrman's score for The Day The Earth Stood Still, which is a rather noisy needle drop).
For TDTESS this is the one to get.
On old A&M vinyl
Why? A Pavlovian response to seeing his name earlier in the thread. Able to crank it up a bit as Mrs Plane is out...

Lucinda Williams - West
Early evening, seems right, sounds great.
Oliver Nelson - The blues and the abstract truth
One of my favorite jazz albums.
- Alto Saxophone, Flute – Eric Dolphy
- Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone – Oliver Nelson
- Baritone Saxophone – George Barrow
- Bass – Paul Chambers (3)
- Drums – Roy Haynes
- Piano – Bill Evans
- Trumpet – Freddie Hubbard
Adding my best wishes to Dan Steel (Jim), I've just caught your news and the postings. Hopefully the worst is over mate and you can look forward to renewing your acquaintanceship with the roller and paint brush a.s.a.p. when you get home. Let's hope the Toffees get a win for you tonight but it's a very dodgy team that Marco is putting out IMO.

Indeed, best wishes for a speedy recovery - and a convincing Blues win! Very interesting line up by Marco.

Looking forward to the box set in September.
Me too!
Me three!
Fancied a bit of Bach, so here he is at his most accessible. On late '80s vinyl.
Now Playing......
Ketil Bjørnstad - A Passion for John Donne
Ketil Bjørnstad (piano), Håkon Kornstad (tenor saxophone, flute, voice), Birger Mistereggen (percussion), Oslo Chamber Choir and Håkon Daniel Nystedt (conductor).
Streaming on TIDAL...... continuing on with the discovery of Ketil's catalogue, some beautiful music and exploration of the poet John Donne. Wonderful project!
Something of a contrast to my pre-dinner play of Ian Drury, but there's something very pleasing about this album.
The Sea Within is a progressive rock super-group formed in 2017 by Roine Stolt, Daniel Gildenlöw, Tom Brislin & Marco Minnemann. There is some serious talent here, this is my second spin of this album and I know this will be played a fair bit more. This album was released in June 2018.
On vinyl
Why? Mrs P is still out and I'm feeling irresponsible (Mind you, the words are totally incomprehensible. Is it in English???)

Tony Williams + Allan Holdsworth = supreme fusion outfit. Great album.
The Kinks - The Mono Collection, the Black album, 2016 remaster 180gm vinyl
1st spin of my new boxset, playing the Kinks (Black) double album, collection of singles and B-sides, some of the finest rock songs ever recorded, brilliantly sung and played, excellent SQ.
Mario Biondi and The High Five Quintet - Handful of Soul
Naim played the track 'This is What You Are' at their ND555 demo at Loud and Clear last week (I wasn't there).
I found it on Tidal and it's joyful although I have to make do with a N-272.

I've got that set Eoin, and the SQ (and music) is stellar. All analogue too. Kevin Grey did a grand job.

Universal have released an EP (on Spotify) of four tracks from the forthcoming BG box set. It's wonderful. The demo version of "Hurry Tuesday Child" is exquisite.
That is a killer cool album cover...outstanding artwork.

I have no idea why I waited so long, it’s great.
