What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)
Posted by: Richard Dane on 31 December 2017
On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Keith Jarrett playing Handel Keyobaord Suites. Jerome was play8ng this earlier, so I decided to listen from Tidal. I have Jarrett’s Mozart and Bach recordings, but not this, something to be remedied soon by a trip to the river. Lovely playing by Jarrett of these beautiful pieces by Handel. (Being a philistine I’m happy these are piano rather than the harpsichord he used for some of his Bach.)
Now Playing.......
Bill Frisell & Thomas Morgan - Small Town
Streaming on NAS........ Found out that Bill & Thomas is playing in Seattle on Monday February 19th at Jazz Alley and picked up tickets. He will also be playing in Eugene Oregon on Saturday night (17th) & Portland Oregon (18th) if there are others in the Northwest interested in seeing him. I do enjoy Small Town quite a bit.
My favourite P J Harvey album - best enjoyed at a decent volume
P J Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea
Sheryl Crow
Gov’t Mule, Live With A Little Help From Our Friends.
The Mule,on fine live form, from a New Year’s Eve gig, blasting through a set of rock classics and their own music, with various luminaries of the southern rock scene joining them. Great high energy well played rawk!
Van Morrison moondance

He was sitting playing guitar in a pub in Ventnor (Isle of Wight) on a Saturday afternoon (regular feature apparently), really classy guitarist !
Nick Page (g) , John Pearce (p), Leon Clayton (b), Martin Drew (d), Sheena Davis (voc)
Vox Luminus - Handel & Bach
A very beautiful performance of the Magnificat and Dixit Dominus. Sound quality is also very good. A joy to listen to.
Allmusic.com:
The Belgian early music group Vox Luminis has made several wonderful recordings of lesser-known Baroque repertory. They cultivate a distinctive sound with ten or 15 singers (here there are ten) and a small instrumental group, diverging completely from the general Italianate-operatic trend toward brisk tempos, sharp accents, and dramatic conceptions. Here they take on two very familiar works and meet the challenge of creating unique interpretations. Even in the splendid Bach Magnificat in D major, BWV 243 (sample one of the big choruses, perhaps "Fecit potentiam"), they are smooth and even delicate. The sound is all the more impressive in that leader Lionel Meunier does not really conduct; he sings in the choir itself. Yet the carefully burnished sound is extremely coherent. The effect is to deliver a personal aspect even to these highly public works. In this kind of reading there is the necessity for the performers to deliver text intelligibility and for the instrumentalists to deliver balance, and all succeed nicely, as do Alpha Classics' engineers, working in a pair of churches (Belgian for the Handel, Dutch for the Bach). This is a beautifully rendered representation of standard repertory that draws you into entirely new ways of looking at the music.
Hungryhalibut posted:The new album from Nils Frahm, released today. Absolutely excellent. If anyone wants it, it’s much cheaper to buy direct from Erased Tapes, rather than using Qobuz. £9 for the high res is great value.
Thanks HH, I've just previewed "All melody", on Tidal. I very much enjoy all Nils Frahm's recordings.
There's an interesting "monologue" by Nils, in his Berlin Funkhaus recording studio on You Tube - ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_RKVUMaPek if anyone's interested.
CD Leonard Cohen - The Essential
2 cd set, 31 songs, according to RSM is "a mesmerizing collection of epic songs spanning over 3 decades".
(1969)
Santana - Santana
Their debut, I remember being blown away when Santana arrived on the scene and this first came out closely followed by Abraxas. This Sony Legacy edition has a few of previously unreleased tracks live at Woodstock plus their great Fried Neckbones.

Erich, I'm not sure how much you want to explore Leonard Cohen's work but there is a great fine sounding box set still available in the UK for under £24 on Amazon. Eleven of his CDs between 1968 and 2004, I can recommend it highly if you need or want to get to know his back catalogue.
Cheers S.
Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa
Black Coffee - Tidal HIFi
First listen and It’s a good one, will definitely be buying it when I am in Glasgow next week.
Edward
Chris Stapleton - From A Room: Volume 2
What can I say. I really love his understated style that still manages to whack you around the head occasionally, but in a nice way. His vocals are so unforced but so impactful. Very clever, very talented. A great set of musicians supporting him also.

Another one released today and getting a first listen via Tidal.
I've got my fingers crossed for this one...
I don't think you'll be disappointed it's a belter IMHO. For some reason I thought it might have been yet another live album from the pair but it's all in studio.
Only half way through my first listen of this. Belter indeed!
Yep it’s an absolute belter, will need to order this one, thanks to Nigel.
It is a very good album. Though I'd suggest that the title track (Black Coffee) doesn't have quite the caffeine content as the version on Rival Sons Hollow Bones.

Moon Duo - Occult Architecture Vol. 2
Released a few months after Architecture Vol. 1 this is their Ying to the Yang, lighter than the first dark album. Here's hoping they both get to be played at the gig next week.
