What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)

On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:

(1981)
Jon & Vangelis - The Friends of Mr. Cairo
This is a bit of an old favourite that I like to trot out once in a while, good SQ from an early original CD backing up the lovely tunes and melodies on this fine collaboration twixt Jon Anderson and Vangelis.
Sounding wonderfully nice from my Naim CD5SI/Hi-Line/NAIT5SI & Neat Motive SX2 speakers - NAC A5 cables - Volume dial at 10 O clock and feet merrily tapping away.

Pleased it's good Stephen, but I thought you'd gone 'puters?!

Hi Chris,
every CD I own and every CD I purchase gets ripped via dBpoweramp on my laptop and then sent to my QNAP with twin 3 TB Red drives.
I don't have streamer yet as I am waiting for the release of the ND5 XS 2 so in the meantime i'm just enjoying CD replay via my CD5SI, which is a really great sounding player by the way, much better than streaming from Qobuz or the Music Station app via the QNAP.

Having a sort of Beatles moment. I'm sure you all know the album, but this is obviously not the final picture used on the sleeve. Maybe we should have a spot the differences competition. From memory, of course.

Did not realise Pedersen died in 2005 - only 58 ?!
Saw him playing at the Albert Hall a good few years ago - great !
2007 reissue CD, with bonus tracks. A fortuitous random pick.

Kenny Drew trio - if you could see me now

- Bass – Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen
- Drums – Albert "Tootie" Heath*
- Piano – Kenny Drew

(2018)
The Doors - Waiting For The Sun
My first opportunity to listen to the second album from this half-century celebration. It features fascinating rough mixes giving an insight into how the final tracks were put together, I've yet to get to the handful of live tracks in Copenhagen but thoroughly enjoying this hi-res offering.

Richard Thompson - 13 Rivers, 1st day release vinyl
Back with the system after a few days away, second listen to RT’s new one. Loving it, I think these may be some of his best songs of recent years, his rhythm section are world-class, Eischorn is a damn good second guitarist, and Thompson is one of the greats. Fantastic album of brilliantly played varied songs.

They look like nice boys!
There was a story a few years ago about a crochet group of little old ladies in England who published an online newsletter called Slipknot and were getting death threats from fans of the band for taking their name in vain.

Thanks Stephen.
Just been listening to Rob Newman on philosophy, on R4. Good value on Sartre advising us to live with fear. But he himself lived with his mother.

Alison Balsom - Paris
Streaming on TIDAL.......... taking out Alison for a first time spin and she is sounding lovely! My granddaughter is thinking about playing the trumpet in school band and thought it would be nice if I expanded my knowledge of female horn players. The two most recent that I have listened to that come to mind are Anat Cohen and Yazz Ahmed but nothing beyond that comes to mind. So if anyone has a favorite female horn musician give me a recommendation.
Check this one out ????

ThanIs Bert, The Beethoven quartets, especially the late ones, are some of the most loved music of my life, I’ll pick up this set.

(1989)
Duran Duran - Decade
Not a favourite band of mine although I did get into some of their music back in the day. Playing this is more about nostalgia and great memories of those years when they were strutting their stuff and I was having great times with some wonderful girls who remain good friends to this day. By the way this is a very well mastered with wonderful SQ on the Japanese Toshiba-EMI label.
Now Playing........

Aoife O'Donovan - In The Magic Hour
Streaming on TIDAL........ Listing to Aoife on this individual release (she also plays with the group 'I'm With Her') and this singer/songwriter has a wonderful voice, lyrics and music. Also a lovely group of musicians backing her up on this album.

John Hiatt - Slow Turning (1988). First pressing vinyl, such a good sounding recording. I've seen him live a few times, talented guy.

RT is also a very nice bloke. He frequents my local "The George" in Barford St.Michael which is a tiny village about 4 miles from Banbury which in itself is about the same distance from Cropredy.....
Having recently acquired an LP12 I'm revisiting all my vinyl including what many people of my generation regard as one of the finest LP's of the early eighties:

First....Van Morrison - Into The Music

.....and now Victory - The Broken Instrument

Both recent purchases and they couldn't be more different. But somehow, as they are both so up my street, they each already sound like old friends.
I just love listening to any great music.![]()

It probably won’t surprise you to learn that I’ve spent 2-3 days a year in your vicinity since the mid-‘80s.

Exactly what it’s about, great music is music that moves or excites you, genre is irrelevant, the joy of music is why we do this.
Currently listening to the Grateful Dead’s Anthem of the Sun (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition).
