On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.

Both recent purchases and they couldn't be more different. But somehow, as they are both so up my street, they each already sound like old friends.
I just love listening to any great music.

Exactly what it’s about, great music is music that moves or excites you, genre is irrelevant, the joy of music is why we do this.
You said it Eoink.
The Kinks - Something Else by the Kinks, from the Mono collection box-set
Decided I needed the Kinks, lucky- dipped into this recently purchased box-set. Great quirky, very English in theme and style, pop-rock songs, great interpretations by Ray Davies, fantastic guitar work from brother Dave, and the rest of the band are fantastic. Great SQ from this box-set.
I often seem to follow Richard Thompson with the Kinks or vice versa, it’s a mental link that causes it. RT started with Fairport Convention, both the Kinks and Fairport started in the North London suburb of Muswell Hill in the ‘60s, the Kinks a few years earlier than Fairport. Each had a great singer-songwriter and a great guitarist, RT was both for Fairport (Sandy joined after they'd left Muswell Hill IIRC), the Kinks split the roles between the Davies brothers.
Fun Loving Criminals - Mimosa, this is a mixed bag of b-sides,remixes, rarities and covers that hangs together rather well.Includes a great version of The Climax Blues Band's "Couldn't Get It Right"
ECM’s reverberant recording amplifies Varjon’s already dynamic style, including what sounds like generous use of the sustaining pedal, to epic proportions - ideal for staying awake at night. Varjon doesn’t go really soft, even in Ondine, but the playing is otherwise beautifully judged and executed, especially in Gaspard where he mixes clarity of vision and atmospheric colour to rare heights.
cheers

Not the faint-hearted, is that album
Must play it again soon and the the woofers a serious work-out.
Brad Mehldau - Live in Tokyo
FIne solo piano playing by Brad Mehldau. He plays a 19 minute version of Radiohead's 'Paranoid Android'.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced, ‘80s vinyl
I saw Hayseed Dixie play last night (thrash bluegrass or as they call it rockgrass), and they played a good chunk of Freebird, so I fancied hearing the original. One of the all-time great debuts, classic Southern rock, the Gibsons of Rossington and Collins provide the dual guitar line, Ronnie van Zant is a great frontman, the keyboard/rhythm are superb, and some of the best rock songs ever.
Some classic early 90’s sounds from Neil Finn & Co
Recently purchased vinyl...not sure how this passed me by!
Reminds me a lot of Mark Knopfler's solo work which I really enjoy...
Ry Cooder - Why Don't You Try Me Tonight, I have all the albums that this comp is drawn from, but it is a great listen on an early cd from '86.
Chocolate anyone? Always been a favourite. Streaming on Tidal
1963 - Tidal..
Lou Reed - New York, Original U.K. vinyl.
Lou returned to form with this in 1989, a great rock album. As he wrote in the sleeve notes, you can’t beat 2 guitars, bass and drums. Angry lyrics about what was happening to his beloved city, superbly set to brilliantly played rock songs, this and its successor Magic and Loss for me match in quality his Velvets and Transformer heyday, essential rock.
Duran Duran All you need is now: modern funk with an up tempo beat and 80s pedigree, reimagined. First pressing.
Now Playing..........
Cindy Bradley - Bloom
Cindy Bradley (trumpet, flugelhorn, horn arrangement), Tim Bowman (lead guitar track 1), Mel Brown (bass tracks 1-7), Freddie Fox (guitar, rhythm guitar), Michael Broening (keyboards, programming), Tony Morra (drums Tracks 3, 5, 10), Thano Sahnas (guitars tracks 4, 8), Marion Meadows (tenor sax track 5), Jaared (alto sax track 6), Mario Mendivil (bass tracks 8-10), Jay Soto (guitar track 9) and Michael White (drums track 2).
Streaming on TIDAL......... I had asked for recommendations of female trumpet players and DAN STEEL was kind enough to mention Cindy. Through the first two tracks and she is sounding very, very nice! Thank you Dan!
Gram Parsons - Grievious Angel, ‘80s UK vinyl.
The last album from Parsons, the great pioneer of American country rock, with the Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers and then his 2 great solo albums, this being released posthumously. Stunning country-rock, superb songs, Paraona and his protégé Emmylou Harris harmonising perfectly, guitar from the great James Burton, music doesn’t get any better.
Underworld - Everything, Everything (Live)
Added a 555PS DR to my system and I'm now Dad dancing on the man cave ceiling to Rez/Cowgirl.
Awesome!
Jools Holland - Hop The Wag,
Lindisfarne - Nicely Out Of Tune, ‘80s vinyl.
Fantastic folk-rock, a great debut album, some great songs played brilliantly and with enthusiasm.
Before discovering Sarah Davachi, I happened upon Loscil (more here https://loscil.bandcamp.com/ for all his albums)
and live...

It is connected to my 272.
Late Junction on BBC R3 where Max has just played Not With Standing by Get The Blessing, from their new album Bristopia which is out next week. Two blokes from Portishead apparently, plus one each of trumpet and sax.
Very taken with it.
