On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:

Bentley Caldwell
Because it's a wonderful album part of which was being played very, very, very softly in a restaurant last night as part of a compilation they had made up to include Foy Vance and Sean Rowe which worked extremely well as a combo and surprisingly so at super soft levels. I'll nip round for a coffee or something more substantial tomorrow morning and find out who their music fan is.
Leonard Elschenbroich, cello | Alexei Grynyuk, piano
Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943): Cello Sonata in G minor op. 19
Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975): Viola Sonata op. 147
Playing on Compact Disc on Dark Was The Night Records - Superb dose of Blues legend Slim Harpo
Great next album of this trio
Great album...

Now that’s a great restaurant if the food/wine matches the music.
Last album before seeing the movie of the evening...
On CD. You can't beat a bit of Haydn after a day on the coalface.
Out in the UK in Nov.

In my view it does
CD The Beatles - Revolver (today I bought this CD, I only had an LP and wanted a digital copy)
I think this is the best Evanescence album. Such vitality. Always blows the cobwebs away.

I’ve just realised it’s the great restaurant you were talking about earlier, so it looks stunning, has great food and drink and plays excellent non-mainstream music at levels that don’t interfere with conversation. It might even convert this non-fish-eater.

Richard Thompson - 13 Rivers, WAV CD rip.
1st play of my digital copy after a couple of big black disc runs. Musically it’s superb, he’s been producing consistently high class albums over the last decade or so (as well as his masterpieces from his earlier periods), the rhythm duo of his “wimp trio” complement him brilliantly, and his songwriting is as good as ever, this might turn out to be my favourite Thompson album for quite a while. A great songwriter whose guitar playing is so stunning and yet so subtle.
Sounding very good from spinning platter, the vinyl does sound better in my system, but the top-end Roksan against the NDX probably isn’t a fair comparison, and it’s a joy to listen to on both media.
On to disc two of The Girl From Chickasaw County. The sound is fantastic, and the bonus cuts absolutely stellar.

MARTHA VELEZ Fiends & Angels (1969 UK first London label issue 10-track stereo LP, re-released the following year with different artwork on Blue Horizon (which by the way I am still looking for) . This Joplin-esque debut features an all-star line-up including Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Mitch Mitchell, Paul Kossoff, Jim Capaldi, Christine Perfect [Christine McVie], Brian Auger, Keef Hartley & [it is rumoured] Jimi Hendrix.
Streaming on Tidal. Different art but it;s the same album.
Richard Thompson - Still (extended edition), Original U.K. vinyl.
Felt the need for more RT after 13 Rivers, went back to a recent one. The 45rpm Triple album, superb songs played wonderfully by a great band, lovely stripped back production as on quite a few recent RT albums, a master at the top of his game. That guitar playing is ridiculous, it perfectly underpins the songs, yet is so simple/complex as needed. The EP that originally was only on the extended edition CD has some fantastic songs.
In some ways RT albums are quite predictable, there will be intelligent lyrics with dark cynical views, broken hearts, some real romance, humour, social anger. The musical styles will usually have a classic folk-rock number, a jazzy number, one or two rock outs, and several which perfectly integrate multiple influences so that I can’t pigeon-hole them. Then you have RT’s guitar, which ranges from perfect acoustic subtly underpinning the words, to superb subtle electric doing the same, and then one or two blasts which are as powerful as anyone has ever done. Add the stunning bass and drums from his trio, and selected others in vocals and instruments, and ir’s impeccably played/sung. It’s predictable because it’s always an album of brilliantly crafted songs in multiple styles, usualy with a song of a new style, played wonderfully by someof the finest musicians around. With few exceptions, if another musician produced an album with so much variety I’d be excited by the range of music, with RT I just expect it.
