What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XIV)

On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
nigelb posted:Tony, I am really liking your photos of original old record sleeves and those quaint round black things. I Know, I need to get out more!
And the inside of the record sleeve on that particular album is even more impressive. Outstanding, some would say.
Now playing.........
Marisa Nadler - Bury Your Name
Streaming on Tidal.......... starting off this Saturday with a Marisa Nadler album. I listened to her 'For My Crimes' album yesterday which I enjoyed so here goes another......
UB40 - Homegrown.
The boys continue to bring out fresh sounding albums, and this one, from 2003, has more than a hint of Bhangra Beat about it, and
is hugely enjoyable.
Another disc from this set. It contains an early (December 1972) mix of the album, which lacks the "Speak To Me" intro, plus Torry's vox on "Great Gig" and all the spoken word segments. The mix is also slightly different, having a 'harder' edge. It's a hugely illuminating listen, proving that the Floyd's last minute decisions and additions (Jan/Feb '73) were crucial to making the album the monster we all know and love.
Also included: some live stuff from June '72; an early take of "On The Run" (then known as "The Travel Sequence") when it was a guitar-based jam; Rick's early piano piece ("The Violent Sequence" that eventually became "Us & Them"; and "The Hard Way" from the aborted Household Objects sessions, in which the Floyd attempted to make music by using non-musical 'instruments' (rubber bands, aerosols, sellotape, gravel, etc). It really works, although it would be a lot easier to do these days with sampling.
A great listen.
Gregory Alan Isakov
Doyle Bramhall II
Now playing..........
Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill
Streaming on NAS......... a couple of mentions recently of Steely Dan put the thought front and center that it was time. Taking 'Can't Buy A Thrill' out for a spin, certainly one of my favorites from '72! Sounding fantastic.......
Graham Parker - Howlin’ Wind, WAV CD rip
Continuing my Graham Parker revision, his debut album. One of the great debuts, some blistering rock with the Rumour on great form, songs ranging from the acerbic and angry through to bittersweet. Intelligent lyrics, driving rock tunes.
Saw this album posted on here a week or two ago and realised that I've haven't heard this album since the era in which it was released. So I found one on Amazon for less than £4 and am now refreshing my memory. The 'electronica' backing does date it a bit.
Peggy Lee - The Best Of
Revisiting some old favourites that haven't been played for a while.
My favourite P J Harvey album. Superb songs, superb music.
P J Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea
Playing on Vinyl on 4 AD Records - Just fabulous from The Cocteau Twins - They didn't name it Treasure for nothing
Now playing........
Steely Dan - Countdown To Ecstasy
Streaming on TIDAL............ continuing on with another album from Steely Dan....... Sounding quite lovely this Saturday morning while preparing to head out the door to run some errands! Life is pretty good.......
Roland Hanna - Milan, Paris, New York
Sir Roland Hanna and his fine trio playing compositions by, associated with, or written for John Lewis, the musical director of the Modern Jazz Quartet.
- Bass – George Mraz
- Drums – Lewis Nash
- Piano – Roland Hanna
Paul McCartney - Flowers in The Dirt , always worth playing to enjoy the Costello collaborations, the album on the whole was seen as a return to form.
Next......Joan Armatrading - Joan Armatrading
...and now...Jack Johnson - Sleep Through The Static
Both guitar led singer-songwriter fare but there the similarity ends. Other than of course these are both wonderful albums in this contributor's humble opinion.
I've got a few Madonna albums but tend to play only Ray of Light, which I like a lot. Someone on here (sorry, can't remember who) suggested this album so I got it. It's living up to its title
(1999)
Screamin' For My Supper
Beth Hart's debut solo album and a very fine effort it was too, you've got to love her blues rock voice and hard edged commitment to the music she writes and sings.
Sting - Brand New Day.
CD. Georg Philipp Telemann - Triple Concertos - Simon Standage - Collegium Musicum 90
Various Artists - King Jammy's Dancehall 3: Hard Dancehall Murderer 1985-1989.
Compilation of artists probuced by and released on King Jammy's Records compiled by reggae revival specialists Dub Store Records in Japan.
Not the best sound quality but this series of four compilations are quite comprehensive and also contain the instrumental dubs over which the different artists perform.
