On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
ChrisR_EPL posted:Spirit Of Eden had a flurry of mentions recently which prompted another whirl of it here. Shawn on 6M Breakfast has been playing trails for a recent programme on 6Music presented by Guy Garvey and featuring a look back at the album, with guests. Haven't got round to listening to it yet and it expires soon, Oct 20th poss. Search Guy Garver Spirit Of Eden on the radio iPlayer.

The last post prompted me to dig out this.
There is a live set on you tube of Talk Talk from this period and they were a great live band wish I had seen them then.
I have to say that although probably more commercial The Colour of Spring has always been my favourite Talk Talk sonically there is a sparseness about it that is just fantastic as are the vocals a great recording and my UK 1st press vinyl copy is a reference record of mine.
London Grammar's first record has a similar production effect it would be interesting to know if they were fans.

Like you never saw them but from the live stuff I have of theirs I wish I had made the effort.

Its a new transfer apparently from the original master tape. Whatever, it is much clearer than the 1995 master I have got as well.
Got this from Japan off ebay - cost £21 + £2.50 postage. Worth the cost because its one of my favourite records ever. I bought the LP record in 1987 for about £3 I think and I still have it.
This Japan CD is a very nice thing - a replica of the LP record cover. Its part of a series with Phaedra, Rubycon and Stratosfear - all new transfers. As soon as I heard this one I went and ordered Rubycon and Phaedra. I will report on the SQ of these when they turn up.
Nice, I have an original 1975 vinyl copy that I convinced my sister to buy me for Christmas that year! Super album.
You just damaged my bank balance! Similarly one of my great favourites so couldn't resist the chance of improvement....now the long wait for delivery and attempts to resist also buying Phaedra and Rubycon...
Sorry about the bank balance! It took about 2-3 weeks to come for me. If its from the same seller that I got mine from, it is well packed and came in great shape. By strange coincidence as I type this, I have just got a dispatch notice email for Phaedra!
There is also an SACD of this, which looks very similar but is not dual layer, so you can't play it in a normal CD player. So its important to make sure you buy the right version - I got the normal CD. You can see all the different versions, including catalogue numbers, on discogs.
Hope you like it!
Giving a try with this one...
Can't beat a bit of Bill in the morning!
Quatuor van Kuijk - Mozart
Playing on Compact Disc on Naxos - This has been a real grower and now a real Vivaldi favourite
It’s 30 years since Talk Talk released their “classic” album , Spirit of Eden"........giving it a spin, and it still sounds fresh and new.
Andras Schiff - Schubert
Andras Schiff plays on an 1820 Brodmann model piano from Vienna on this recording.
Playing on Cassette on TDK AD -X C60 - Superb Yes album from 1977 - A Band pushing their musical craft to the limit.Definatly in the top 5 Yes albums for me.
David Knopfler
Anthology, Vol. 2 And 3 - (mp3-320)
Great selection of David’s music, bought last night from CDBaby, did not notice that CDBaby now only offers mp3 downloads, this means I will have to buy the album again to get cd quality.
Edward
After seeing them life this week - amazing album...

Brad Mehldau - Live at the Village Vanguard
Playing on Compact Disc - Nice Housey album by American Band Deelite from 1990 - Groove is in the heart was the big single off it
Now playing........
Ketil Bjornstad - A Suite of Poems - Poems by Lars Saabye Christensen
Ketil Bjørnstad (piano) and Anneli Drecker (voice).
Streaming on NAS........... I enjoy this album quite a bit, a combination of poems written by Lars Saaby Christensen while on his travels around the globe then put into musical compositions by Ketil and song by Anneli. Simply beautiful.........
Another great Compo.
In my young years I listened more to this one then made in Japan. I had it originally on cassette tape....
Playing on Cassette on Maxell UL S C90 - Live Doors

This would by the way be an album which could benefit from a renewed mastering and high resolution recording...
Now Playing.........
Ketil Bjørnstad - Life in Leipizig
Ketil Bjørnstad (piano) and Terje Rypdal (guitar)
Streaming on NAS.......... continuing on with Ketil this Friday morning, enjoyed the piano with vocals and now piano with guitar. A fine album with beautiful tracks and best described from the ECM note, "Cranked-amp electric guitar and acoustic piano is a rare, possibly unique, duo combination, but as Ketil notes in his tour diary liner notes, “I am not always the softest pianist, and especially not when I am working with Terje.”" I find the combination works quite well and has brought a smile to my face as I get ready to face the day.
Gary Smulyan - Alternative contrafacts
Nice sax-trio jazz by Gary Smulyan. ‘Contrafacts’ describes a method of sharing chord progressions from legacy musical compositions to create something new.
- Gary Smulyan - Baritone sax
- David Wong - Bass
- Rodney Green - Drums
Minimalist yet melodic acoustic electronica.
Its impossible to understand why Blue Note decided not to release this superb album until 16 years after it was recorded. I guess we'll have be thankful that it was eventually made available.
