On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Sounds of War: Poulenc | Janáček | Prokofiev
Maria Milstein, violin | Hanna Shybayeva, piano
Now enjoying one of Mary's finest albums. The Thorn Upon The Rose is a particularly lovely song.
UK first press vinyl, another of today's charity shop acquisitions. Aha!

Love this album.....we put the “babes” to sleep to this album, special memories.
Enya > Watermark
Around The World In 90 Minutes - created and mixed by Miracle Mile. Nice electronic music mixed with parts of real pilots and air traffic control dialogs. Recording on TDK SA90 cassette tape right now.
New album from BirdPen (Dave Bird is the singer/drummer from Archive) is really, really terrific.
"There's Something Wrong with Everything"
Clips and stuff here:
(1991)
Daniel Barenboim - Chopin Nocturnes
Because this just seems to fit this glorious warm autumnal evening clear blue skies a precursor to what will probably be a lovely sunset...
Duke Garwood - Garden of Ashes.
Laid back smoky blues from Duke ............. one for any fans of Mark Lanegan, who co-produced this album ............ which is nice.
Freddie Hubbard - Hub-Tones
Post bop joy.
Lou Donaldson - Alligator Bogaloo
Nice mixture of hard bop and soul jazz. Recorded in 1967.
- Alto Saxophone – Lou Donaldson
- Cornet – Melvin Lastie, Sr.
- Drums – Leo Morris
- Guitar – George Benson
- Organ – Lonnie Smith
Wayne Shorter - Native dancer
Wayne Shorter - Soprano Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone
Milton Nascimento - Vocals, Guitar
Herbie Hancock - Piano (A1, A2, A3, B3, B5)
Wagner Tiso - Electric Piano, Organ, Bass
Jay Graydon - Guitar
David Amaro - Guitar
Dave McDaniel - Bass
Roberto Silva - Drums & Percussion
Airto Moreira - Percussion
Sonar Kollektiv comp from 2007. Some great recipes in the inner pages. Not sure if it's meant to be 'dinner party jazz' or something more personally earthly and wholesome.
Try streaming it to your little QB in the kitchen when cooking up a storm over that hot range.
Playing on Vinyl - Very atmospheric electronic by Tangerine Dream's Edgar Froese
(1972)
Simon & Garfunkel - Greatest Hits
Seeing Tony playing some S&G made me want to give them a rare listen, this was a lovely very early 'best of' compilation.
Mark Lanegan - Gargoyle.
Following on naturally from Duke Garwood ^^^^^^^, Mark's subterranean growl has seldom been heard to better effect than here.

MDS, playing this at the moment I’ve got quite a few of both Mary and Frances Black CDs all so good very difficult to pick a firm favourite. I find they are as enjoyable now as when I first played them many many years ago artists you come back to time and time again.
Honest Jon's comp of Candi Staton.
Paul Bley - Play blue: Oslo concert
Solo piano improvisations by Paul Bley
Kenny Dorham - Whistle Stop, an oft ignored hard bop classic (IMHO).
Double CD. Don't often listen to this kind of chillout stuff, but it seems quite appropriate this evening:
Will Hoge - My American Dream
Finally got to listen to this Ewemon recommendation and a fine album it is too of hard-hitting Country/Americana. Liking this very much.
From one hard-hitting album to another recommended by Ewemon too a while ago IIRC, but this time in more of a bluesy vein:
Altered Five Blues Band - Charmed & Dangerous
This is an absolute belter. I know I often say that, but this album really is.....honest!
And what an album title. Priceless!
The lyrics on this are brilliant, for example:
'My wallet's like an onion, open it up and it'll make you cry'. Love it.
On CD on MacBook
Why? 2 granddaughters, aged 1 & 5, have been returned to their mother after a weekend with us, so house and life returning to calm and order...
