Brandi Carlile. The Story. On CD from 2007. A mix of folk rock, and Americana that features Brandi's powerful voice met by producer T Bone Burnett's ambient sound signature.

J.J. Cale & Eric Clapton. The Road To Escondido. On CD from 2006. First listen. A mellow and laid-back venture. All good for relaxing. Quite a star-studded cast of musicians contribute. Notable to me for being Billy Preston's final studio recordings.

First spin. Joseph Calleja sounds good on his newest release, keeping the characteristic fast beat in his voice well under control. Calleja is a lyric tenor who is here trying on some of Verdi's heavier fare including Radames' opening aria in Aida, and a long extract from Otello. I took lengthy notes - but in summary, there is some truly stylish and impressive singing going on here, by Calleja and his guests (including Angela Gheorghiu, returning the favour), but the whole endeavor sounds a bit studio bound - Ramon Tebar fails to make much of a mark in these bleeding chunks.

Recital discs and I have a bit of an awkward relationship - I like them and keep buying them, more to support and hear the singer than out of a desire to enjoy great music played well. They are short term pleasures, with the exception of a very select few. I plan on returning to this disc often, but I expect this is not one for the Shelf.

Cheers,

EJ

Lizz Wright - The Orchard

One of my favourite vocalists. What she lacks in sheer vocal range, she more than makes up for in the tone, texture and expression in her voice. A wonderful singer.
