On the eve of a new year, it's time for a new thread.
Last year's thread can be found here:
Cold, rainy day. Tend to reach for some low key tunes.
CD, 2013
Beth Orton - Kidsticks
CD, 2016.
Now:
CD, 2001
Joan Baez - 75th Birthday Celebration Disc 2, WAV CD rip.
Couldn’t resist the second disc, more sensitive beautifully sung settings of classic songs, friends including Richard Thompson, Jackson Browne and Paul Simon. Love this set.
Springing The Atom - The Family Cat (from ‘Magic Happens’)
Now here is a band for whom I have much fondness. Only two albums, but a bunch of great songs, including this. They deserved greater acclaim at the time, and now.
Eoink posted:Will Hoge - Small Town Dreams - WAV CD rip
1st play of another new to me album by Will Hoge, and it’s another belter. Great country rock songs of Americana, as the title suggests tales of being someone from small town America. Great songs, he sings and plays superbly, this album rocks and has soul.
Keep going you may end up buying them all.
Some old blues from 2012
Connan Mockasin
The new Paige Chaplin
SACD set on the Berlin Phil. label. Listening to Symphony No. 5 in B-flat
Del Amitri - Can You Do Me Good?, their sixth album on which they trod a different path with samples and loops taking over from guitar driven material.
New tunes aired by black midi
Starts around 2.20 - Brace yourself for the last two tunes. A dynamic young band whose 'live' performances are simply thrilling!
Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight
It's easy to go on about Bright Lights but I love the stonking guitars on When I Get To The Border too.
CD, 2004 from the Mapleshade Records label. Wonderful version of 'Amazing Grace'.
Now Playing.....................
Dave Douglas - Strange Liberation
Dave Douglas (trumpet), Bill Frisell (guitar), Chris Potter (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet), Uri Caine (Fender Rhodes), James Genus (acoustic and electric bass) and Clarence Penn (drums, percussion).
Streaming on NAS.............. a recent pick up at Fat Cat Records, not familiar with Dave's work but some familiar names of musicians I enjoy and thought I would make a small investment and take it home for a spin........
A fresh arrival from across the pond...
IMO one of the underrated guitarists of our time in rock music. When people discuss "guitar gods" his name seldom comes up, but he will be better than more than half the names that do get bandied about in such discussions.
AlanP's post of Jimmy Smith led me to exploring Jimmy McGriff's back catalogue, this one including trombone..
Paul McCartney. Wingspan Hits and History. On CD from 2001. An excellent compilation of Macca's tracks from the previous millennium. The SQ is VG, the DR decent (quite good relative to CDs of its' time). Disc 1 (Hits) is an impressive retrospective of the poppy chart-toppers. Disc 2 (History) digs a little deeper into more artistic tracks, and tends to be the disc I play most.
Great album, fits very well as number 4 in the series...
Will see her live tonight. Looking very much forward...
