World Cup Russia 2018 Thread

As ever I'm very much looking forward to the World Cup as a football fan but again am struggling to find much enthusiasm for the England team. I can remember in the past getting excited about our prospects and being devestated at our losses in Italia 90, Euro 96, France 98 even up until Euro 2002 in Portugal when Rooney was such an exciting young prospect but since then my interest in the national team has waned and recent performances in South Africa, Brazil and the last Euros in France have just gotten worse and become an embarassment.
Hopefully though Gareth Southgates youthful looking squad can change all that and play without the fear that seemed to infect our squads in recent tournaments. Whatever we should be in store for some great football, I wonder who will be the surprise team, who will be the youngster that excites us all and who will win the Golden Boot this time round?
Well, the most technically gifted team went through, but it can't be only me who feels that this young Nigerian team deserved better.
They showed heart, passion, and gave everything, though the truth is that they didn't make the best of the chances that they had.
Job done, Argentina, hard luck, Nigeria.
Another very tense and absorbing game between Argentina and Nigeria. As Dave M says, Nigeria did well but ultimately lacked the big-game discipline both in taking chances but more so in closing a game down once they'd equalised. I thought Argentina looked weak at both defending set-pieces and using them and France won't fear them in the final sixteen. That said, I was impressed at the support they had in the ground.
Finally I thought the Turkish ref had an excellent game. He got all the big decisions right, was calm throughout, and used the VAR quickly and effectively. Well done that man.

Nigeria suffered from an extremely lack lustre performance in their opening match if they had played with the same effort in that first match as they did in their next two matches then they would now be through to the next round.
S Korea have scored and Germany are heading out! Shocker!
S Korea score again!!!
Blimey!!
All teams I've supported sofar have failed.
Schade Deutschland alles ist vorbei.
Don’t write off the Germans, theirs still time for the game to be declared null and void, and they will be reinstated....
Oh boy, Germany was terrible. The two goals for South Korea were not decisive, but that Germany didn't manage to score in 90 minutes, hardly any chances, an agony.
Apparently it's 80 years since the last failed to qualify for the next stage.

Youre not German by any chance?
Don’t mention the VAR...
VAR! What is it good for?
Absolutely everything!

Excellent.
So unexpected.....
Wow I'm so glad I didn't take my own advice and put my house on the Germans to win.
It was reported that their was unrest in the camp, maybe the manager has lost the dressing room, as the expression goes

Hence my prediction on page 2 of the Germans not making it as far as the last 4. It would fill me with great joy to see them go out on penalties.
Well I got most of the above right.
Great to see the back of those cheats Muller and Neuyor.
And hopefully that is the end of 80s porn star with a crash helmet haircut manager.

Well I for one am sad the Germans have gone out because you want the best players and the best teams to be playing in the later stages of the World Cup.

Why so much hatred? It's only the World Cup. And we won it 2014, 1990, 1974, 1954. Your turn.

You and everyone else who dismisses Mesut Ozil should know their football and check the stats because each and every season since coming to the Premier League he has had the most assists and made the most goals, more than Salah, more than Mane more than Ali, more than Sanchez, more than Silva, De Bruyne, more than anyone in that respect he is second to none.
His job is to make goals not charge around the pitch making tackles, tracking back or winning the ball back and that is what he does better than anyone else in the Premier League and that is why Arsenal sold Alexi Sanchez but broke their pay structure and their rules to keep him.
He is King of the Assists.
Sorry I didn't see this afternoon's games. Stunning combination of results. Selfishly, and given England's poor track record against them, I'm pleased to see Germany go out, but there's a bit of me that's sorry to see the holders go out so early. That said, given the unsportsmanlike behaviour by some of the German players towards the Swedish bench after Kroos' wonderful last-gasp goal at the end of their group game it's sweet to see Sweden go through.
Having just watched Brazil dispose of a lacklustre Serbia this evening, I'm still not quite convinced by Brazil. Mexico will fancy their chances. And, it might just be me, but I wish Neymar would cut out the show-boating. When I see it I harbour a hankering for a player like Roy Keane to teach him to have respect for his fellow professionals (in other words, take him out with a bone-crunching tackle).
Germany will regroup and perform again in the future like they did in the past. So will England have the mettle, balls or discipline to win the World Cup...?

Sorry I forgot that his pivotal role for Arsenal in winning the treble every season since his arrival.
