Just about to watch the secong half of 'The Odessa File.'

All the best from Fredrik

'Die Hard in the white house' - for once, the marketing blurb is accurate. This is excellent popcorn stuff.

Cheers,

Haim,

Just watched it myself. A rather superior samurai film I think. More thoughtful than the usual slash and cut fest.

Started working my way through the series. For me this is not as good as Band of Brothers but still worthwhile.

MDS both excellent shows, but Pacific has a more fragmentary story line IMO.

Saying that you can almost smell the blood and mud.

Agree with that BigH.  The sets and effects in Pacific are very well done and you can see where the money was spent but I think the individual characters in BoB are richer and more developed which adds to the storyline.

If you get the opportunity, also watch Kobayashi's original version from 1962. A brutal indictment of the warrior ethos (remember WW2 wasn't that long before). Also a great performance by Tatsuya Nakadai.

Yes. Harakiri also reminds me metaphorically how Obama painted himself in a corner, playing politics with his bamboo sword. But who knows? we might get a happier ending if Vladimir Putin rushes to the rescue.

Light weight but entertaining. One of the rare American films in which the kids are not cute nor brillant, just kids. Recommended.

Just watched this and enjoyed it - predictable down to the smallest detail but a great ride nonetheless.

I would not argue with that.

If you liked Hara kiri I recommend 'When the Last Sword is Drawn' - this is an excellent film

Finally got round to watching this on DVD. It's absolutely terrible. Beyond dire.

I enjoyed it immensely.

La Haine.

Watched the original many years ago, although it doesn't seem like 18 years ago. Enjoyed the 10th Anniversary Reissue just as much. Excellent film.

Watched Django this evening. Absolutely brilliant. Classic Tarantino, and wife and I loved it. Highly recommended.

Age of Innocence

Posted on: 05 October 2013 by Haim Ronen

In this absurdist comedy, only a tone-deaf, music-hating detective can stop a band of renegade percussionists who are terrorizing a Swedish city using their surroundings.

A must see.

The Artist

This story is a predictable as the seasons. As soon as the film opens and the year is displayed you will know the structure and form of what you are about to watch; but, none of that matters as the story is so masterfully delivered through the direction, the cinematography and the acting.

My wife was completely unconvinced and grudgingly sat down to watch, but was soon caught up in the narrative, as was I. When the denouement was delivered, and in the way that you will predict in the first ten minutes of starting this film, it does not come as some tired retread of a thousand other films, but as fresh and earned - a welcome friend at the conclusion of a story well told.

A superb film, so far the best I've seen this year.  Based on a true story of the 1988 rebellion on the French Colony of New Caledonia, you just cannot help but feel the agony of our protagonist as all his best efforts are continuously undermined by political machinations both local as well as back in Paris. An impending election in France means time is running out for the peaceful handover of hostages...

We've just finished watching :-

I watched the series when it was originally broadcast in 1982. I remember it was one of those TV Dramas that I wasn't too keen on watching at the time but, being a BBC Drama production, I thought It'd be worth enduring for the first episode, but I was instantly hooked and it stuck in my mind as one of the best things I've seen on TV.

Now, watching it again after thirty years in the company of the present Mrs tonym, who's never seen it previously, my admiration is increased. Everything about this production, from the excellence of the script (adapted from Anthony Trollope's "The Warden" and "Barchester Towers" by Alan Plater) to the sheer class of the array of great british acting talent, (with Alan Rickman doing a superb turn as the loathsome Obadiah Slope) the direction and the staging, is the BBC at their very best.

The story is gently amusing, the characters superb; I really cannot recommend this enough. A wonder.
