Did not get great reviews but in my opinion it is well worth watching it.

A very decent film but it's no Saving Private Ryan. The action scenes are done well enough but don't place you 'in the scene' as well. I also had a problem with Pitt's casting as i half expected him to break

into his character from 'Inglorious B'tards' at some point.

It'll be a long time if at all before we see another WW2 film that gets anywhere near Spielberg's classic.

I enjoyed it; it certainly wasn't as bad as the reviews suggested. Great surround sound!

Yes. A good summary, rackkit, though I enjoyed the film and will watch it again. The effects are excellent, especially the attack by the Tiger tank but I just wish Pitt wouldn't find an excuse in every film to get his shirt off. Mind you the ladies will disagree with me, at least those who watch war movies in the first place.

My other half fell asleep during the final battle, which obviously was after Pitt had taken his top off...

an interesting film that I found quite disturbing, the ending especially was uncomfortable to watch.

Planning on getting that on Blu-Ray at some point but we've watched Moon too. Hope that's not going to be a problem!

The Salt of the Earth is a documentary from Win Wenders, about famous photographer SebastiĆ£o Salgado, co-directed with his son. The story of every famous black & white picture that he took is explained by the photographer, and is divided into chapters similar to his picture books, examining human drama in underdeveloped countries of Latin America and Africa.

Yep, always see something new in there.  I think for a big fan of the show its worth watching the extended one...the scene with the stranded Playboy Bunnies is interesting.

Every time I watch it I feel sorry for the VN people.  I photograph quite a few VN events.

Found the final battle hard to take. US gung ho.

Do you mean perhaps the number of hits that the German sniper had to land on Pitt's character before he went down? Didn't you know that the SS were only equipped with air-rifles?

The UK DVD of this was a complete travesty - poor transfer probably from a VHS master and awful dubbing.  I've bought the Blu-ray which should hopefully be an improvement.  Indeed, anything would be an improvement on the original DVD release.

I didn't know much about this before watching it, which probably enhanced my enjoyment as the twists and turns were new to me.  I've see the beautiful Ms Pike in a few films before and thought she was one of those 'eye-candy' actresses.  No longer.  Her character and performance in this was excellent. She seemed to pull off the trick of being stunning and genuinely scary at the same time. Well done that lady.

Three characters play (by August Strindberg) adaptation taking place in Ireland instead of Scandinavia. In 1890, in Fermanagh, during the course of a midsummer night, Julie (Jessica Chastain), the daughter of the Count, an Anglo-Irish aristocrat, attempts to seduce her father's valet, John (Colin Farrell). The affair quickly goes to some dark places, with power and class playing a key role. Not exactly my cup of tea.

Been watching a few war films recently, including:

Flags of our Fathers

A movie based in the Pacific theatre and using the iconic image from Iwo Jima of the raising US flag.

I thought this was excellent. It is easy to decry the sale of war bonds, but this put the argument efficiently, whilst using this as the central theme to look at the action and its impacts.

Windtalkers

This is a film that I would like to be more enthusiastic about. I felt that the subject, the use of Navajo indians to securely encode messages, was excellent but that the execution was rather mixed; there are moments of subtlety and introspection, racism and realism, but these are frequently undercut but the theatrical delivery of the fire-fights.

The penny seats go to see war action so...
