Don Giovanni, a film adaptation of Mozart's opera by Philip Losey, shot in Vicenza and Venice. Still very beautiful after all these years.

Thx Daan,

One of my favourite opera's. I have a few versions, but not this .....just ordered.

Don Giovanni, a film by Philip Losey

Hi Daan,

Well, what a great film.

I have a couple of stage based adaptations, but I think this version does far more to give a sense of time and place, emphasising the social mores.

The art direction on the movie is interesting, and on occasion brilliant. The movement between real location and set, with forced perspective, adds to the atmosphere Losey creates.

Soundtrack

This comes with DTS 9624. Unfortunately this is an unusual codec. I remember when I bought my AV2 Naim stated that this would be made available, and never was. That said I don't think there is a lot of material extant that uses it.

I attempted to rip the DVD to mkv making use of the DTS 9624 soundtrack. What was ripped was the core DTS at 48k sample rate. The file gives no info on the bit rate.

I then played the DVD using the Oppo 105D, the audio bitrate reported was the same as the streamed mkv, I therefore believe that the Oppo is also unable to access the DTS 9624 audio.

The sound quality is very good regardless.

Definitely not for everyone, but I found this a very funny comedy, with Depp, Paltrow, McGregor and Bettany on great form.

As with any movie, that's why it's a movie - focussed on achieving effects in the small period they have to entertain somebody.

We enjoyed this last night. Phew! Entertaining nonsense but very well done. Superb sound for those with home cinema systems.

I read the book, Bert, the guy was really on the phone with his wife when firefights started. Some tough dudes can never stop being good husbands..

Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit on Sky +. Usual  fare from this series, reasonable story and enjoyable couple of hours diversion. I preferred Clear and Present Danger, but all have been very watchable .

We watched Superman Returns previously, again an OK franchise  re-boot.

BigH,

Shadow Recruit .....I think you are being kind!

This was rather clever.  Try not to think too hard about it though as it will tie your brain in knots...

Hi Richard,

The problem for me is that it is a paradox ....but one I thoroughly enjoyed watching.

Mud

I film that stars Matthew McConaughey, but not really. The actual star is Tye Sheridan with one hell of a great supporting cast; including Joe Don Baker!

I was completely caught up by this film. It is set in a river based community that is fracturing due to societal and political pressures in Arkansas. These fractures lead to interconnections across disparate people who are trying to survive, and maintain a world that is being pulled away from them.

For me the only slight mis-step was the final act which I felt was a bit too high octane; but I am happy to edit it in my mind.

This is a film I will be re-watching.

Another one I'm glad I got on BlueRay is Dune...it was rubbish before, but now its great again.

Yes, pretty good. Not the new 2001, though.
