All the best from Fredrik

Hi Tony,

Yes I agree. It opens well with a splatter gun approach to humour that hits far more often than it misses, but then runs out of steam; however, it never really grinds.

Mr Holmes

I love this film.

It covers the latter part of Sherlock Holmes' life, and why he chose to retire from being a detective. The movie juggles three strands which resolve nicely. It is sentimental, with predictable elements, but well crafted and well acted.

Really, watch this.

We watched this at the weekend too. Really enjoyed. Clint just gets better with age.

Saw this awhile back and really liked it.

I watched this recently with my 22 yo daughter. I hold Eastwood's directing in high regard and was not disappointed. An accomplished, engrossing production. The time sequencing, venue shifts, editing, and pace of the film are excellent. Based on trailers, my expectation was for more of a love story woven into a war movie. Rather, the film goes far in establishing a soldier's allure to return to warfare in lieu of a loving wife and family. The commradery, dedication to a 'cause', and thrill of the kill (although Kyle was not necessarily portrayed as exhaultive over any of his kill shots) seemed a stronger beckoning than to remain home with his family. An addiction perhaps, coupled with the notion of unfinished business in the battle zone.

I thought the ficticious Iraqi sniper played well as the embodiment of the motives driving Kyle to return. His kill of the sniper theatrically signified the point at which he felt his mission was complete, and he was ready to return home for good.

My daughter also thought the film was very good. I asked whether she viewed Kyle's murder as tragic, and she did. I saw it somehow as twisted poetic justice; having survived for so long in a foreign war killing a variety of nameless enemy targets, only to be killed in the security of the homeland he saw himself fighting to protect, by a fellow veteran in arms. Brutal irony that likely would have seemed over the top were it not true.

We have just caught up with the Hunger Games trilogy, library DVD and Netflixs.

Not too bad I guess, as we did watch them all. I expect we will wait for the last one and watch on Sky+.

Interesting enough story, maybe we could adapt the concept for  to-days warring factions?

Obviously aimed at a younger audience as they are rated 12, all our "youngsters" went and saw Mockingjay PtII yesterday.

Good summary, joerand, with which I would agree.

+1

I enjoyed that it did question the motivations and ethics of the war without beating the audience over the head, or undermining the sacrifices and pain borne by the troops; or ignoring the horror of living in such an environment.

Based on the classic First World War memoir, this is the incredible true story of one young woman’s struggle to survive the horrors of war, which robbed her of everyone and everything she held dear, but was ultimately unable to break her extraordinary spirit.

Thx Haim ....on the 'to see' list.

Yes, an excellent movie. I read Vera Brittan's book many years ago and thought it was a superb evocation of those terrible times. Unlike most films of a book you've read, this one did not disappoint.

We watched American Sniper, and enjoyed it well shot (NPI) good acting.

Hadn't realised it was based on a true story.

The final, incomplete, season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This series is of immeasurable value to any Star Wars nut, and is far better done than the prequel films. Season six includes two story arcs that explain important gaps in the overall narrative: it explains Order 66, and it sets up Yoda for his role in the original trilogy. Several plot lines that run throughout the series don't get answered; at least one was taken further in the follow-up series, Rebels.

I got interested in this film ( below ), not from the promo but from an interview with the film maker.

Its one of those films that explores a more grounded horror theme.  I.e it doesn't stray too far from a real world scenario.  It also proved to me that the little Rel strata 5 sub can find the resonant frequency of my room, making the action on screen seep into the whole house. Very un-nerving.  Watched it on DVD, looking forward to watching the Blueray, which i picked up cheap, over the Christmas break. A traditional time to watch too many movies.

Ok, not a DVD but this was shown on Film 4 last Thursday. It's the debut film of director Yann Demange and it's brilliant! It had my stomach in knots with the tension almost all the way through. If you've access to Film 4, it's showing again this Sunday at 21:30.

Not one to miss!
