What DVD have you just watched?

All the best from Fredrik
Ray - Close Encounters (the original, rather than the 'Director's Cut' version) is 1978, ET is 1982.
Starring Miley Cyrus? Had my doubts but I quite enjoyed it. On amazon Prime.
Justice League on AppleTV rental in '4k'.
Loved it on the whole though Ben Affleck is awful as Bruce Wayne.
10 Cloverfield Lane on Amazon Prime.
A well made and well acted, esp Jon Goodman, film. I don't want to say anything about the plot as that would give the game away. Worth a watch.

Watched it two nights ago..... Expect the unexpected. Just keep an open mind. VERY enjoyable.
The Disaster Artist.
Very funny.
First They Killed My Father - Directed by Angelina Jolie - On Netflix. I have to say I was very surprised at how well this film was directed the sense of tension she creates for the first 30 mins is truly excellent.
Paddington 2 - on DVD courtesy of Cinema Paradiso.
No beating about the bush on this, it's brilliant. The only fly in the ointment is that High Grant possibly upstages even the bear - but then I guess that's all part of the character he plays here, so possibly intended all along.
It's a film that you can enjoy, and indeed love, whether you're 9 or 99 years of ages - we watched it with my Mother and at moments I caught her rapt one moment and in hoots of laughter the next. I dare even the most cynical to try to not enjoy this delightful film...
Netflix: Lost in Space
Win, Lose or Draw?
For me a draw.
Plot
The story revolves around a planet in crises and a possible chance to colonise another world at Alpha Centauri. There is an event that leads to a number of colonists escaping to a planet where the story unfolds. In a change from the original although the focus is the Robinson family other families are with them, as well as the dastardly Dr Smith.
Story
Episodic with threads running through the series. For me this was a bit of a curates egg. Parking the odds of randomly turning up near what Star Trek would call a Class M planet, and the carbon based flora and fauna, and the lack of medical issues when the two interact you can quickly see that we are in Science Fantasy. If you can accept the patina of Science Fiction wrapping this fantasy story THEN you will be able to enjoy what I think is the series strength, the family interactions and inter-personal dramas. I think a very strong element in this could have been Dr Smith, but the stretches the script writers made in order to keep her in the picture made her distracting rather than a strength for me.
All round good acting and production values may help you keep engaged; I confess I was hooked enough to plow on to the end, but I came away with mixed and mildly negative feelings.

A friend of mine and I went on my birthday last December, and a pair of 50 somethings laughed uproariously throughout. I even had a suspicious amount of moisture in my eye at the happy ending. I expected Kathy to tease me about it until I saw her wiping her own eyes. Great film.
Paddington 2
Completely agree. Such a shame it did poor business, especially in the USA. Hope it hasn't put the kibosh on Paddington 3.
Well worth the watch

Great film but Christian Bale's movies usually are.
The Magic Flute - Bergman: BFI Edition - BluRay & DVD
The Good: LPCM soundtrack, 24/48.
The Not so Good: The film resolution.
This is a BluRay, BUT try and watch it in any aspect ratio rather than the native 4:3 and I got artifacts; running at around 20 Mbps.
In 4:3, reported as 16:9, the film has no marks or ticks.
The movie is, of course, excellent. Being LPCM I will rip it from the BR in due course, getting two for the price of one.

Surprisingly, we enjoyed it more than what we had expected but I don't think it deserved to be selected as the best film for 2017.
Saw this yesterday. Pretty good, enjoyed it.
Star Wars - The Last Jedi
I hadn't read any reviews before watching this. Lesson learned.
To my eyes, a mess of a film, where I was struggling and questioning myself on whether I had snoozed and missed bits. I hadn't. Nothing original, no character development, with characters coming and going when the 'why are they here' question remains fresh - topped off by a nonsensical plot, lame merchandising placement and some scenes which defy credulity/rationale, even for SW. IMV, TLJ is the worst of the SW films for me by some margin - even Attack of the Clones had originality.

Hmm. I still haven't seen it. My son wasn't impressed when he saw it at the cinema. I've been thinking of buying a Bluray but and now tempted to rent a one-off viewing and stream at about one third of the cost because 'once might be enough'.
Don’t bother. It’s absolute crap.
Peaky Blinders S1
love the Nick Cave and white Stripes music and evocation of a post war industrial Birmingham.

I'm with HH on this one, it's Pony & Trap.
I don't know why I bought the DVD as I was disappointed back in December having watched it on the big screen.
Lord knows what the upcoming Solo film will be like, but if it's 50% of Rogue One I will be happy.
