Yesterday I got hold of the classic early 1970's Pearl Harbour film, "Tora, Tora, Tora!"

The first part is the buildup to the attack, filmed from both sides (the Japanse in the movie are Japanese actors, talking Japanese, not English with some invented Japanese accent, and filmed by a Japanese crew). It's very well done, and even if one knows how it all end up, it's very exciting!

The second part is the attack. Part of the special effects are quite nerdy, but most of it is very good as there is real planes flying around and getting smashed up, not digital effect ones. Get's a bit to long.

Highly recomended, mostly for the insight into the planning and build up to the attack.

Tora, Tora Tora!

I remember watching this twenty years ago on TV. There were a couple of reviews saying what a poor film this is - like you I enjoyed it.

Around the world in 80days - Pierce Brosnan and Peter Ustinov.
The made for tv version, not bad for a newspaper give away (2dvd) set.

Last night we watched Babel; quite unrelenting but excellent film with brilliant acting especially from the Japanese cast. Pretty much what you have come to expect from his others: 21 Grams, Amoros Perros etc. all well worth seeing.

Yes, you're right.
The best part, for me, was the one played by the japanese cast.

Last night I watched a rental copy of "The Graduate". A landmark film. I'd forgotten just how great it is.

Then I watched "Shooter", a region1 dvd I got from Amazon.com. It kept me up until about 2 this morning.I thought it was exceptionally good. I thought Mark Wahlberg carried the film well, given that he's not called on for a huge range of emotion. Bloody (literally) good action sequences. And no intrusive music soundtrack.

The Zodiac preview on the Shooter dvd hardly sold it to me I must say. Looked very dark. Similar to Se7en I believe.

Moonraker ... for the ??th time - though not for a few years.

I know it's dated and it is heavily criticised but, taken in the right frame of mind, I like it ... a great laugh from start to end with a few good sequences and superb music by the master.

And hearing it through my 5.1 Pro-Ac Reponse speakers really does bring the sound alive. Now if only I had (several?) Naim amp/pre-amps rather than my "oldish" Pioneer AV receiver just how much better would it be.

Reading some other posts - notably by Chris Kelly - I'm biased towards 5.1 but pleased you find 2 channel Naim to your taste. The movie Gladiator was one of the first I tried with the Pro-Ac speakers and that was incredibly good ... made up for the ropey story being portrayed on the screen.

As for Open Range: a brillaint movie - one of the best I've seen in a long, long time ... and yes the final shoot-outs are very well done.

One Deadly Summer, 1st seen on tv years ago, but now on DVD - Isabelle Adjani is amazing, a femme fatale if ever there was one. And check out that walk, it's outrageous, as well the garage scene Winker

Glad you are enjoying your 5.1. If I had the space I might go back to it, but to be honest the 552/250 do a pretty fab job in 2.0!

My friendly Naim delaer came round on Wednesday eve for a bite to eat with a fellow Forum member and to let me have a play with some new stuff(300, Chord Sig cables). He showed me the classic moment in "Gladiator" at around the 1hr 30 mark, when a chariot crashes in the Coliseum with a bloody great grey gas bottle on board! Classic! Don't know how I missed it before.

Miss Potter

You don't have to be a six year old to enjoy this film about the children's author.

And the singing of Katie Melua over the end titles (and as a video in the extras) is beguiling.....

Cheers

Was that a preface to Belleville Rendevous Gianluigi?

Last night we watched Infamous the second film of late about Capote's writing of In Cold Blood .
Strangely more 'entertaining' than the first film with Seymour Hoffman; it looks at the relationship with the accused and less at the author in some respects. Both worth seeing though.
