Miss Potter

Renee Z. and Ewan Mc. in a film that, as I understand it, does fairly accurately portray the middle years of Beatrix Potter's life.

I suppose I could damn this with faint praise by saying it's 'nice'. If I was being slightly nasty I could say the R. & E. replay acting from earlier films. Both of these comments are probably a bit harsh, the film inveigled its way into my emotions enough that when events take an unfortunate turn I was emotionally effected - and, as I knew it was coming, I think this shows that this is a well made piece of cinema; I just don't think there is enough grist for the mill, a lot of effort signifying not a great deal, but with some charming moments.

OK. Not one for my collection.

Dear Mr Underhill,

I thought the "Queen" was a splendid film and one which presented in the the Monarch's character portrayal qualities which I wish were stil prevalent in the general population!

The general public has not only become effusively emotional, but fickle.

I watched BladeRunner and decided to google the question of how many Nexus6 replicants there were. I was presented with a large number of discussion forums about the film and I was surprised at the depth of analysis some of the fans apply to their hobby. Then I wised up with the realisation that most of the world is geeky; we don't have a monopoly of geekiness on the Naim forum Smile

It did seem a little sad to find the name of the missing Nexus 6 was Mary. It seems such a prim and proper name, and not one I would have guessed at.

Rob,

If you Google it you will come up with a series of youtube links for a program from Channel 4 that discusses Bladerunner in depth - interesting stuff, especially for us geeks.

The Holiday

I went to see this at the cinema, and I must admit that my memory was better than re-watching it on DVD. Definitely one I won't be bothering with again.

The Prestige

Hugh Jackman & Christian Bale.

My elder daughter really liked this, but then she is a Bale obsessive. I think this is a tale that Edgar Allan Poe would have been pleased with, definitely one with a creepy edge.

Not one I'll watch again, but kept me watching. I might buy it depending on how much I'm pestered!

Red Sorghum- fantastic Chinese film starring Gong Li. My favourite Chinese actress.

Later it will be followed by To Live another great Gong Li film.

Flushed Away

Well I was pleasantly surprised, my family all really enjoyed this. Great vocal cast and some genuinely funny moments - including some very musical slugs. In my view this one beats Cars into a porcelain bowl.

One for my DVD collection.

INLAND EMPIRE. OMG, nobody puts a nightmare up on the screen like David Lynch. This one makes Mulholland Drive seem mainstream.

Dirty Dancing

OK, problem of having a 16 year old daughter!

That said I am surprised to describe this as quite a sweet film.

The whole thing has a feel of a slowly fading present, into which some of the current world forces it's presence; the 'current world' being late 1950s/early 1960s USA.

The use of 'sweet' to describe a film that shows a divided society, unwanted pregnancy and back street abortion may seem odd, but I think the common shared moral values goes some way to justifying this.

Dirty? Certainly sexy - and not a bad film to use for sex education purposes for those of you with daughters!

The Hidden

Ordered this one a couple of weeks ago, had to get R1.

I remember watching this in the mid/late 80s and really enjoying it, real B-movie Sci-Fi fayre with lots of action, a high body count AND music a la Terminator - what's not to like!

The plot is not original, I remember reading it as a teenager in the early 70s: Alien moves from human body to human body entering by the mouth, in fact it has even been copied since in a episode of Angel; plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery. There are enough twists here to keep you engaged, although why an alien would find a human female attractive is beyond me!

Violent fun, and is in my collection!

Memoirs of a Geisha

I had been put off this film when it came out originally, no idea why.

Lovely film, really well shot, and quite gripping drama I felt.

Sally (Mrs big h) and I have just watched Pan's Labyrinth. Most enjoyable. I thought the sub titles would be a pain but did not detract from the film.8.5/10

It's not that bad! Subtract the ad breaks and its only about 20 hours! Just watched episodes 3 and 4 of season 6. Gripping as all the others. But got to hit the sack as I have an unfeasibly early start tomorrow! If ever we meet up I'll be pleased to lend you the subsequent series.

Tom Jones

BBC Adaptation with John Sessions: What a brilliant adaptation, really captures the ribald nature of the novel, great stuff.
