Stranger Than Fiction

Ok, I'm a sucker for a chick flick and this is the proof. I really enjoyed this movie, surprisingly. Sensitively portrayed I thought.

Cars

Hmmm. Doc Hollywood in cartoon form? Weakish story I thought, but enjoyable. The picture quality and sound quality is very very good.

I agree Frank, I think cars is by far the weakest film Pixar have made, the only one I haven't bought.

Blade Runner - The Final Cut

I have never bought this film on DVD, as this has been promised for sooooo long.

I remember queuing to buy a ticket with my best friend as a 15 year old. Thoroughly enjoyed it then, it's now even better.

On the whole the film is just tidied up, and the Noir commentary removed.

In some ways the film seems even more visionary: the disappearance of English; the scarcity of 'real' animals; genetic engineering - but this combines with: a pervasive presence of smoking; genetic engineers working in freezers with end products - such as eyes.

The new additions are, in the main, fairly subtle, such as the Dove flying into a landscape in keeping with where Rudger is dying! Of course the Unicorn sequence is not, but it makes the origami Unicorn at the end profound!

...and the ridiculous ending has been chopped.

If only Ridley had looked after the Star Wars update!

Shawshank Redemption. First time I have watched one of my own DVDs since May 2006! I really must do something about getting a way of playing them in my old CD only style PC!

I am going to experiemtn with an external USB DVD drive on it tomorrow!

HD-version of the bourne ultimatum, well worth watching

Firstly, Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines, and then oddly the Bourne Ultimatum!

It was a good sort of an evening.

Working my way through the extras in the 5-DVD BladeRunner Final Cut. May take some time !!

I've just watched Ratatouille. Sheer brilliance, both in animation and script.

Not a children's film though.

Tony,

I agree - but a welcome return to form after Cars.

Just been watching the first season of Voyager. Got to say that this is my favourite Trek after TOS.

Just bought a few discs for over Christmas:

Hairspray;
The Good Shepherd; and
Apocalypto.

Oh, and got The Simpsons' Movie for my eldest.

You lot are too critical it's a bloody cartoon already, not some intense french film noir.
As petrol heads my son and I enjoyed it, there was quite a bit of "in " stuff. Guess you can't please everyone......etc.

Having been qualified in this field...I have to disagree.

Even a "normal" cartoon is hard enough to create, let alone the modelling, animation scripting, lighting and rendering techniques that are used in 3D animated films

a cartoon indeed!

Harry Potter & the order of the Phoenix.

Difficult to imagine a more turgid waste of time.

I was talking about the popularity not the content per se. People are expecting these "animations" to be high art not populist entertainment which may not have the highest standards of content. Production is a whole different area

LOL!

I was talking about the technical aspect.

Plot-wise most films, er I mean 3D films are...

It's not often we disagree but in this case we do. OK it ain't the greatest film in the world but for this genre it's OK.
Have you seen Over the Hedge? So much hype so much failure.

Go out for a day...!

My criticism is not based on plot, skill, direction etc. It's based on the fact that I didn't enjoy the film ....and more to the point neither did my children.

You are, of course, free to think what you like.

I generally REALLY like the Pixar films, I was glad that Rat. was good.

....and yes, Over the Hedge was as bad, if not worse.

The Page Turner

French thriller with minimal dialogue. Good not so much for what happens, but the understated way in which it is all played out.
