The Simpsons Movie
I don't really enjoy The Simpsons that much, although my younger daughter is building quiet a collection. Surprised myself by finding this funny ...and in spectacular 2D.
Court Jester
Classic with Danny Kay on top form. Required viewing!

Over the holidays I watched,
"Murder At The Gallop," "Murder She Said," and "Murder Ahoy!" All from Rutherford as Marple.
"Mr And Mrs Smith." [Incomprehesisible to me, but there it is].
"300," which also made no sense. I was fortunate to have had Ancient History as a siubject at scholl, and as Captain Erikson [Jack Hawkins] says in "The Cruel Sea," "Where the linkage?"
ATB from George
PS: Before Christmas I saw "Leon, The Professional," which seemed to have something going for it, but too much blood as well.

Downfall
A reconstruction of the final days of Hitler.
A powerful piece of cinema that shows the deconstruction of people caught within a situation where they have very limited control, and no future.
The people portrayed are a mixture of the ordinary and the truly awful, yet even the awful are not cyphers, but fully fleshed characters - which makes their decisions and actions even more terrible.
My wife & I found this film very effecting. The portrayal of a civilisation on the brink of destruction opens some interesting thoughts about our own predicament - dancing on the edge of disaster.
Highly recommended.

Apocalypto
Got to say that I HATE the way Gibson mangles history - and so I am not fond of his movies ....but this I enjoyed.
A very straight forward story arc - that I found tremendously effective.
Personally I would have cut the 'premonitions' scene.
This is one I have bought.

Last night we watched "Casino", which for me is shoulder to shoulder with "Goodfellas" as the pinnacle of Scorcese's film making.

Hi Chris
Mine cost £54.45 from the Amazon and just arrived - so I'll be watching tonight and, at a couple of episodes a week, for the rest of year - much better than modern TV (IMHO).

I was given the Tin box DVD edition of Blade Runner.
The Final Cut is an excellent transfer although I felt it wasn't quite as well paced as the more usual Director's Cut. The picture quality is better than the Director's Cut and the sound quality is excellent. I find myself wondering what a BluRay edition would look like, given the amount of work done on the thing.
The extras are an interesting document on the subject too. Very happy with this Christmas present...!

Spiderman 3 - I liked this a lot when it came out on the big screen and the DVD is well put together too. I'm a sci-fi fan and rather enjoy the Spidey stuff...

American Gangster - Denzel Washington giving another mannered performance in a slow and ultimately pointless Scott (Ridley this time) film, again. Russell Crowe looks pretty good but perhaps only in comparison.
300 - fairly stylish celebration of death and killing - difficult to see the point really. More bearable than Sin City.
Danny Boyle's "Sunshine". If you liked the original Solaris - you still won't like this.
Entertaining and watched without a sense of duty:
The Bourne Ultimatum - not my favourite in this excellent franchise but good and fast paced all the same. It may be the 'flu, but I cannot remember a jot of the plot but it was fun to watch and I'll be looking forward to running it through a proper home cinema system - maybe then I'll be able to make out the dialogue.
Ratatouille - weird idea - an American film about Good Food AND Loveable French Characters - oh, and rats in the kitchen. Not played for big laughs but watchable and the "message (? we should, er, like rats) is easy to swallow. The children liked it but expected more 'umere.
The winner - "Hot Fuzz".
Apart from some over-gruesome inserts a very clever and well-crafted comedy with excellent performances from everyone (and it does seem to include every one) involved.

Hi George,
Saw it at the cinema and we all enjoyed it. What I found as funny was the reaction of some American reviewers who found the 'switch' from comedy to 'action' off-putting!

It gets that weird Royston Vasey, Ledbury, Bourton-on-the Water feel perfectly.

Careful! I know Ledbury very well! I know Bromyard just as well and that really is weird!
They had the Annual Secret Policmen's Balls there! I grew up exactly between the two between 1961 an 1980! I also knew the Chairmen [both ladies] of the Magistrates in both places.
Royston Vasey, my foot!
