ANGEL-A, french film by Luc Besson (Nikita, Leon, Fifth Element)

Brilliant. A bit short, a bit predictable, alternately hilarious, touching, sad, beautiful. Loved it. Got it cheap at the airport for £5. One thing though - it's in French only so it's subtitles for any other languages. Oh and it's in black and white...

"Aces High" last night. A classic 70s film, well acted and directed by Jack Gold.

It is very good indeed; even more so when you consider Kristen Scott-Thomas and her unique role....
very well acted and quite upsetting at times.

Well sat down with three films this weekend in the hope one would be watchable.

Expected more from Sodebergh but Clooney is hopelessly miscast and Toby M is just inane.

Utterly ruined by the most annoying and in this case pointless use of splitscreen ever conceived.

Ok was not expecting great things, just fun, but it even lacked fun. What a naff weekend thank goodness for music.

But isn't it refreshing though that Clooney, given his mega-stardom is still keen to play slightly more oblique roles. Thinking about Good Night & Good Luck, Michael Clayton etc...
i know what you mean about his place in this film but he does have an authentic naivety about him.

Esma's Secret (Bosnia/Herzegovina 2006)

Film about a girl growing up in Sarajevo after the Balkan War. The "secret" is pretty obvious about 2 minutes into the film, but this is a moving film with some very realistic portrayals of the emotions and actions typical in the characters' situations and excellent and involving characters.

Highly recommended if you like films exploring human relationships.

This has been criticised in other areas for an apparent lack of quality but if you love music and have a 'history' yourself you owe it to yourself to take a look at this series of DVDs.

Barnyard

Great CGI animation for HD. Present for the kids but I loved watching it on my own...funny 'adult' humour to spot and maybe a bit too sad in places for little 'uns!

Last night, The brave One. Excellent, much better than I expected. Tonight it's Michael Clayton. Been trying to rent Control for the past few days but it's very much in demand & my local Blockbuster only has two copies !! Not sure what the score is at BB, they used to stock 20 plus copies of top renters. Confused

Atonement, and the first run in the theatre for the new MJ Acoustic 150 mkII
Its been a while since i read the book and I had forgotton Brionys -ahem- input to the story, I was again left devastated.

fantastic film making especially from such a young director, stunning performances all round and a beautiful sound design right from the opening scenes..
