"Die Hard 2". ....."How can the same shit happen to the same guy etc etc." Quite easily, as it turns out. Another great action pic in the Die Hard series. Passes the acid test - can you watch more than once and still enjoy it?

I didn't know this film. I linked to the song, which is a memory for me. My oldest, dearest friend used to love the song when we were young boys, in 1967. He used to play it again and again. It's a kind of boyhood, afternoon image. He died six months ago. I didn't imagine many other people knew and liked Holiday.

David Lean's "Oliver Twist" with Alec Guiness as Fagin.
Amazingly fine, and entirely not like the musical version ...

Great series. I watch it with sub-titles on or I can't figure out what the hell the drug dealers are actually saying.

All Quiet On The Western Front.
What a sad film. One that every person who kinda thinks war can be lightly entered into, or could conceivably be managed on a clean plan, should watch I would think ...

"Miami Vice". Not Michael Mann's best but still a slickly made story. However, Rachel struggled to follow the dialogue - subtitles might have helped in this instance!

Hours of sheer concentration on the the six one hour long episodes of Smiley's People.
They simply do not make television like this anymore.
If they did then I would still keep one ...

FROST/NIXON
I loved it, Frank Langella as Nixon was fantastic and he really changed my view of the man.

Another vote for this movie. I watched it on a plane a few weeks back. I was really drawn into it.

A Night To Remember.
The first great Titanic film based on Walter Lord's book, with Kenneth Moore as one of the lead members of the crew.
Remarkable for developing a significant emotional punch within a style that is almost documentary [and certainly based in fact] in its undramatic and magesterial unfolding of the rather well known story.
A slow film with a huge impact, completely avoiding sensationalism.

..and any accuracy as it turns out, a good film though all the same.

Dear Howard,
As it turns out evidence suggests that the ship broke its back as it sunk from the front, and so the technical side is certainly questionable.
As for the theory that it was steaming flat out - not suggested in the film, because of a fire in the coal bunker, which was controlled by shovelling the coal into the boilers - well I have no idea.
But as for the vignettes and actual human events shown, they do have the truth of being remembered eye witness accounts.
Of course by the 1950s the survivors were no longer young, but there is an authenticity to it, which does not require accuracy in every detail [in terms of possibly mis-remembered events in the Walter Lord book] for this film to remain rather more significant than the effort starring Capprio, for example.
Certainly anyone interested in the Titanic legend should see it ...

George,
Yes it is a great film, one which I saw years ago on TV. I am keen to add it to my collection, having been reminded of it by your post. There seems to be both 4:3 and widescreen versions available. I would like the widescreen version which I think, but am not sure, is on the Carlton label and comes with a documentary as an extra. Is this the version you watched? Thanks,
Peter

The DVD is the second one I have bought.
The first was the Carlton edition and was widescreen, and double sided, whereas the new one is Rank/ITV and is also wodescreen but contains the special feature on the making of the film within the options menu rather than on side "b."
I think the tracking is better in the new issue, which contains all the features of the old.
I loaned the old one and only got the cover back!
Doh!

Many thanks George. Will order it now!
PS: If you like old British films (as I do) then you really must get "The League of Gentlemen" with Jack Hawkins.

Spooky - have just watched it through to my favourite line: "Do you mind not using that sickening expression?"
