All the best from Fredrik

Just one of the loveliest films I have watched (again and again). A fantastic ensemble cast lead by Sam Neil, with a witty script.

From Amazon 'The Dish could have played the plot premise as a documentary or with a dramatic edge, but chooses instead to present the story at a leisurely comedic pace which oozes charm. The excited little community offers a snapshot of a fondly remembered past full of the idealism of the 1960s. Populated by warm-hearted souls, it's easy to forgive the town band welcoming a US Ambassador with the "Hawaii 5-0" theme instead of the National Anthem. The Dish may not have the sense of danger of Apollo 13, or the dazzling FX of something like Armageddon, but it does have rounded, enjoyable characterisation and a truthful, warming atmosphere, making it easily one of the most enjoyable films inspired by the "space race". --Paul Tonks

I have this film on DVD, and it make a certain appearance every so often. Not all films can really be watched twice with interest, but it diserves attention. A lovely film, IMHO.

I don't know.
I'm perplexed.

Managed to watch the first 40 minutes of this before my partner and I agreed to stop watching this s**t.

It is not Star Trek but some Nicolas Cage, Bruce Willis moronic Hollywood action film with some character names taken from the TV series. No plot sense (well little plot from what I saw). The actors playing Spock and Bones were really rather good, but Kirk idiot was badly cast, badly acted, badly directed and badly written.

If I want to see a moronic Hollywood action movie I'll ........, well, frankly I'll check myself in for a lobotomy.

PS. George, glad to someone else loves 'The Dish'. Have you tried 'About Schmidt' with Jack Nicholson, another favourite of mine from around the same period, also 'As Good as it Gets', plot, character, acting and direction of the highest degree, and above all, no computer effects.

Dear Jamie [L_v2],

I shall watch out for it. I am old fashioned and browse the shelves of HMV about once a month, rather than using the search engine on Amazon or whichever online shop!

With music it is easier as I know exactly what I am after, so don't need the reminder of a physical object to bring me to live!! So Amazon is a splendidway then! I have never followed a sihgle additional recommendation from them though!

About Schmidt, & As Good As It Gets. I will add these to my list!

Another pair of favourite films that have yet to find the shelves of HMV or even DVD release in the UK as far a I know:

Spencer Tracy in Bad Day At Black Rock - a suspense film.

And the lovely comedy, Monte Carlo Or Bust.

Another that is always tied to loads of others in big boxes [which I hate - there is usually only on film I want] is Scott Of The Antarctic.

But I can wait years!

Thanks George

'Bad Day At Black Rock' one of my very favourites, with Lee Marvin and Ernest Bourgnine too. I tracked down as DVD not long ago.

Also 'Ace in the Hole' Kirk Douglas, back in the days when plots made sense, and were not just an excuse for another car chase, or some spaceships blowing up.

I like the way yo broke down my name here, Lv2 sounds almost roman.

The movie (Inglorious basterds) is a kind of cartoon, a kind of strip.
If you want to make your Tarantino collection complete just get it but i would not waste a single hour of sleep on it.

The Tokyo Trials- a Chinese film which is not that great.

David Gilmour @ Gdansk - Stunning, better on DVD than the excellent CD in the package as you can watch the man & his other genius friends at work.
Sadly the last time Richard & David played together

I can't agree. I found it very entertaining and will watch it again at some point in the future. I recommend it. Each to their own, eh?

I really enjoyed it too - great entertainment and one of Quentin's best IMo.

Brad Pit is superb; indeed Mr T seems able to get stonking performances out of all the actors he uses.

Is it last year's one, 'Hello Wembley'? Really funny, watched it over Christmas.

Working my way through Spike Lee's excellent documentary about New Orleans and the hurricane Katrina disaster 'When The Levees Broke', produced by HBO.

I saw it broadcast a couple of years ago, still shocking to see what happens when a government does not care about those too poor to own a car and leave a disaster zone by themselves.

Admittedly not as many laughs as the Michael McIntyre.

'High Hopes' Mike Leigh, with fantastic central performances by Philip David, Ruth Sheen and Edna Doré. I found the other characters a bit too caricatured, but the three main characters carry the film.

'Delicatessen' Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Marc Caro, a really fun film.
