Dear Jamie,

I have seen the Nurenberg film at HMV very reasonably priced. I will pick it up next time I am there. After reminding myself what a great performance Tracey brings to "Bad Day At Black Rock," I am hooked. I often shy away from US based films on the topic of the War, but am now hopeful of something deeper than than the usual style!

Hi George

The film is only loosely about WW2, it is about the second phase of the War Crimes trials after the war, when the civil servants and army officers were tried. Even for a film from the 50's there are some quite harrowing descriptions of events. It also touches on life in a country that is in the process of rebuilding after the bombings that destroyed their cities.

Very very smart dialogue. Rich and deep movie. Visually and acoustically appealing. Beautiful story. Superb acting by most of the cast. Loved it and highly recommend it. A bit surprised I liked it so much since I am more into american film.

Not bad but some parts of it are sheer Hollywood.

Were you expecting much different? I thought it was OK, but I liked Jarhead a lot more.

The strength of the film is in its realism but it still has some scenes (like the guy wandering all alone at night in the Iraqi streets and homes) that would never happen in the real world.
I did not see Jarhead yet.

"All Quiet On The Western Front"

Not in any way easy to watch. I took several breaks, but essential viewing for anyone even contemplating the idea that War can be undertaken surgicially and with little mayhem.

Nothing has fundamentally changed, only the technologies in the weaponry has become more destructive ...

"World's Fastest Indian."

True heart warming film! Colour, but only "2D," what ... ?

Given to me by a friend, a film about the Irish Mafia in New York. Well acted, sad and a bit too bloody for my tender soul. I felt a deep sorrow for all the characters in the final scene (where they all shoot each other) because of their very poor marksmanship.

It took all afternoon, because of frequent rests:

"Schindler's List."

There is nothing to add about the film's story, really. It was the second time I have seen it. The first time about three years ago, I bought the DVD for a Polish friend, and we sat and watched it stiffened with a bottle of Wodka. For this new DVD, this time, there was "Polish Dutch courage."

We liked it very much too. It is a treat these days to watch a film with a story and characters who are genuine and human. Highly recommended.

I'm finally getting around to this:

Just finished watching this again, i seem to watch it once a year or so and enjoy it more each time. This is one of many Roman Polanski's films in my favourites!
The musik soundtrack is by Wojciech Kilar, The City of Prague Philharmonic and Chorus, The City of Prague Philharmonic and Chorus, et al. (i have the musik soundtrack on my wishlist)

Debs,

Thanks for the recommendation. We just saw in the theatre here the latest Polanski "Ghost". It received very good reviews but I thought it was silly and did not make much sense.

I feel the same way. While Ghost Writer certainly is trademark Polanski with lots of moody atmosphere; I think the great reviews it got are just critics playing emperor's new clothes.

Was it anywhere near as good as the 50's version? Keanu Reeves doesn't inspire me to watch the remake.

It wasn't as good as the Michael Rennie version.
It went to a different place, as reflected by the times, it filled a 90 mins or so space well and I didn't switch off. So OK to good I reckon.

Keanu is perfectly cast as an alien who displays no emotion.

Is Reeves like Matt Damon then? His only seeming emotion is furrowed-brow confusion. This suits the central character in the Bourne films for all that ...

I should add that I enjoyed the Bourne films in case anyone thinks I am being completely negative or remotely sarcastic.

I enjoy the Bourne films, too. But Franka Portente was arguably in her best film in Run Lola Run.

Far superior. Which makes it a decent rental. The 50's version is only good through the rosy pink haze of nostalgia.

I have just worked out who Keanu Reeves is!

Matrix ... doh!

I actually enjoyed watching the three a couple of years ago on successive evenings.
