Loved it. What a great movie.

That's a spooky coincidence James!
I watched the director's cut on BluRay last night. It's over three hours long but like all good films it doesn't seem too long.
Unlike any other Super-hero film, and many of the heros are not very nice...
Recommended by me too, a great film.

I will not even use the common excuse ('it was the wife's choice').
The message the film conveys, perhaps unintentionally, is that babies growing up among flies and goats in Africa and Mongolia are turning to be mentally healthier and tougher. On the other hand, the two other shown babies in western societies (Tokyo and San Francisco) who are surrounded by endless attention of non stop goo-gooing parents are verging on becoming basket cases.

"In his (Abraham Maslow) exploration of emotional security, he found, much to his amazement, that the Blackfoot were so emotionally secure “that about eighty to ninety percent of the population must be rated about as high in ego security as the most secure individuals in our [own] society, who compromise perhaps five to ten percent at most.”
In trying to discover why this might be so, Maslow investigated child-rearing practices. He concluded that an emphasis upon personal responsibility was the explanation:
parents encouraged their children to do things for themselves and not to expect parents to cater to their every need. As well, the development of close and warm social relationships, particularly as part of large and extended families, led to the creation of very emotionally secure individuals.
Maslow’s ideas about human beings and their development were changed as a result of his encounter.
He went on to develop the hierarchy of needs, based somewhat upon what he learned from Blackfoot elders."

I stand corrected. It does seem to be an interesting movie. It is my western upbringing that has clearly contributed to emotional insecurity; thus leading to my initial sarcastic comment.
And I am kicking myself that I didn't spot the Mongolian connection on the cover. Mongolia is one of my favourite countries, having visited many times over the past few years. And Mongolia is entirely pertinent to the issues here as the society and culture are currently undergoing an extraordinarily rapid transformation.

Released yesterday for the first time on DVD and arrived today from Amazon with just Super Saver delivery and good old-fashioned Royal Mail.
This film must be one of my all-time favourites. Fantastic, and topical too. Where is Dougal now when we need someone to stand up to the blue menace?!

This was one of my favourite films when I were a lad, so I treated myself to the BluRay.
OK, it's strictly for the more mature SF junkie (or those with a genuine interest in movie history) but I really enjoyed it - the picture and HD surround sound quality is amazingly good and the 1950's visualisation of futuristic technology isn't too far out of kilter (one of the crew appears to use a pocket PC/organiser type device at one stage).
Forbidden Planet was the first film to use exclusively electronically-generated sounds instead of music, and it's quite effective in helping to create an other-worldy atmosphere.
Marvel also at how young Lesley ("Don't Call Me Shirley") Nielsson looks in the lead role!
Great movie.
I do think it is the best film adaption of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest', although I do like the visuals in Peter Greenaway's version.
I bought it recently and still find the effects and soundtrack amazing (for their time anyway). I can't take Lesley Nielsson seriously though in retrospect of his 'Naked Gun' performances.
Like a lot of later effects movies I thought that once you are no longer blown away by the visuals, the storytelling is a bit slow, but then 'The Tempest' always seems slow on film, and perhaps this is one of the faster adaptions.
Transforming the spirit Ariel into Robbie the Robot was pure genius though, and the comedy interplay with the cook captures the comedy aspect of the play brilliantly. By the way the monster was animated by Disney animators, and style of the creature is quite definitely that of their artists.
If you haven't seen it, it is well worth trying, the visual effects for a movie made in 1956 were probably not matched until Stanley Kubrick made '2001'.

Take an old film script from a really enjoyable fantasy film, use a crop of Big-name actors, slap on a large splodge of the latest technology special effects, and create a complete dog's dinner!
Fantastic! Incredible! How do they do it?
-----------------------------------------------
A chilling and effective tale about a young girl with apparently multiple personalities living in an isolated Irish island community with some nasty secrets amongst the rather unpleasant population.
A very satisfying story with lots of twists. Recommended.

Tony, what were the films you posted about?
It looks like Amazon are stating to block remote image linking, or their image server might be down. If you still see the image it may be cached in your temporary internet store.

Weird, I have tried the image links in the address bar, and they will not connect to the server.

http://1.2.3.9/bmi/ecx.images-...mL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
I tried it in both Firefox and Explorer, it might be an ISP problem, strange.

For some strange reason there are a few photos that don't display for me on this forum, yet it's evident other folk can see them OK.
Weird...

Now that's odd. Both pictures have now disappeared...

Right, let's see if this photo link works -
Seems OK...
Anyway, this film's put together from a standard checklist of such films - Lots of action, unfeasible acts of derring-do, eyepopping special effects, romantic interest, dastardly uncle, comedy character, dramatic surround-sound mix etc. etc.
Most of it doesn't hang together well and there's some pretty dodgy acting going on but I confess to enjoying it towards the end. The surround sound's absolutely astonishing and now my benchmark for HD audio.
Good fun.

Just started the first episode of 'The Pacific', very good, but it has a lot to live up to following 'Band of Brothers'.
On the subject of Harry Potter, I have always been disappointed that there has not been a porn spoof 'Parry Hotter' (probably gay).
Nothing would beat the porn title 'Shaving Ryan's Privates' though, which was a gay porn movie, and no I have not been tempted to watch it.

Pleasantville (1999).
Hadn't seen this in a long time, but although the first hour is great, it slowly peters out. A bit disappointing, and also way too long at 2 hours. Pity, as it is a nice idea and has some great moments, but in the end is rather trite.
